Chapter 7 - THE WEIGHT OF BETRAYAL

Chloe was cornered in the lobby,
Her bags searched by agents,
The stolen treasures laid out like evidence,
Of her own greed.
She was crying,
Not out of remorse,
But out of self-pity,
As she was handcuffed,
And led away to the waiting cars.
She looked back at the penthouse,
The place she thought she had conquered,
Realizing that she was merely a distraction,
A temporary plaything,
That Julian was now discarding,
Without a second thought.
Upstairs,
Julian was crumbling.
The walls were closing in,
The silence of the penthouse,
Heavy with the weight of his failures.
He poured himself a drink,
His hand shaking violently,
The crystal glass rattling against the table.
He had lost everything,
The status,
The money,
The woman he thought he loved,
And the woman he had kept,
To stroke his ego.
He was alone,
His mother already on the phone,
With lawyers,
With fixers,
With anyone who could save her,
Ignoring him completely.
He realized then,
That he had never been the one in control.
He was a pawn,
A puppet for his mother,
And a source of entertainment for the women,
He had toyed with.
He sat in the chair,
Looking out over the city,
The lights of Malibu twinkling below,
Unaware of the tragedy unfolding within.
He remembered Clara.
He remembered her gentle touch,
Her soft voice,
Her unwavering loyalty.
He remembered the way she had looked at him,
With love,
With hope,
With a belief that he could be a good man.
He had laughed at her,
Pushed her away,
And broken her.
And now,
He was the one who was broken.
He wanted to call her,
To apologize,
To beg for forgiveness,
But he knew it was too late.
He had burned that bridge,
And he was left on the other side,
In the ashes of his own making.
Victoria entered the room,
Her face a mask of cold fury.
They have seized the accounts,
She said,
Her voice devoid of emotion.
The properties are being liquidated.
We are going to be bankrupt,
Julian.
We have nothing left.
Julian looked at her,
His eyes hollow.
Why,
He asked.
Why did we do it?
Why did we need so much?
Victoria laughed,
A sharp,
Bitter sound.
Because we were the best,
She said.
Because we deserved more than the rest.
We were royalty,
Julian.
And now we are peasants.
She turned and walked away,
Leaving him alone with his thoughts,
With his failures,
With the crushing weight of his reality.
Clara was miles away,
Safe and sound,
Her life beginning anew.
She was finished with the past,
Having closed the door on the nightmare,
That had defined her life for so long.
She was ready to start over,
With the child she was carrying,
With the strength she had found within herself,
May you like
With a future that was hers to shape,
And hers alone to cherish.
