Chapter 12 - THE SUN RISES ON A SAFE HAVEN

The morning sun broke through the curtains,

casting warm,

golden beams across the freshly polished hardwood floors.

I stood by the window,

the very window where Arthur used to stand every morning,

and pulled back the lace curtains to let the light in.

The yard was clean,

the smashed geraniums replaced by beautiful new rosebushes Eleanor had helped me plant.

The air was sweet,

crisp,

and filled with the singing of birds in the oak trees.

Matthew had pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years in prison,

while Jessica received seven for her history of fraud and theft.

I felt a quiet sadness for the boy I lost,

but I no longer felt the biting pain of betrayal.

I had done what was necessary to protect my life,

and in doing so,

I had found my own strength.

From the kitchen,

the sound of clinking cups and the rich aroma of coffee drifted into the living room.

"Margaret!"

Helen called out,

her voice warm and cheerful.

"The coffee is ready,

come have some breakfast!"

Helen had decided to move in with me,

selling her large,

empty house to come live in the warmth of my small fortress.

We were two old women,

survivors of life's storms,

but we were together,

and we were safe.

I walked into the kitchen,

looking at the beautiful white table,

the clean counters,

and my sister's smiling face.

"It looks beautiful today,

doesn't it?"

she asked,

handing me a mug.

"Yes,"

I said,

taking a slow sip of the warm coffee,

feeling the peace settle into my soul.

"It really does."

I looked out the window one last time,

knowing that no matter what storms might come in the future,

this house would always be my sanctuary.

It was built with hard work,

restored with love,

and defended with a mother's fierce,

unbroken resolve.

I was seventy-two years old,

and I was finally,

May you like

truly,

at home.
