Chapter 8 - THE LONG ROAD HOME

I drove through the night. I did not sleep. I did not stop. Every mile brought me closer to a confrontation I dreaded. If Julian was right… everything I believed was a lie. My brother was a murderer. My father had covered it up. And Elena had died screaming a name I had never suspected.
By the time I reached the estate, dawn was breaking grey and cold. I parked the car away from the house. I walked up the drive slowly. I needed to see things clearly. Without emotion. Without the bond of brotherhood clouding my judgment.
I entered through the side door. The house was quiet. I walked to the kitchen and poured water. My hands shook. Julian’s voice echoed in my mind. ‘How could you, brother?’
“Adrian?”
I turned. My brother stood in the doorway. Dressed. Alert. He looked at me. At my face.
“You are back early,” he said. “Did you find him?”
I studied him. Looking for guilt. Looking for fear. He appeared concerned. Not guilty. But appearances… Elena had trusted him too.
“I found him,” I said.
“And?” He stepped closer. “What did he say? Who killed her?”
I watched his eyes. “He said he did not see the face clearly. But Elena spoke a name. Before she fell.”
My brother went very still. “What name?”
I held his gaze. “He said she called out… ‘Vivienne.’”
A flicker of something crossed his face. Relief? Disappointment? I could not tell. He exhaled.
“Vivienne?” He frowned. “That changes everything. If Vivienne was there—”
“She was not there,” I interrupted. “Julian lied. To test you. To see if you would react.”
My brother’s expression hardened. “Test me? Adrian, what is this about? Why would you—?”
“Because Julian told me the truth,” I said quietly. “He said Elena called out ‘brother.’ She called your name.”
Silence stretched between us. Long and terrible. My brother took a step backward. His face paled. But he did not deny it. He simply looked at me. With sorrow. Not surprise.
“Why?” I asked. My voice broke. “Tell me why.”
He looked toward the window. At the grey dawn. “I never meant to hurt her. I loved her too, in my own way. But she found out, Adrian. She found out everything.”
“Found out what?”
“That I was in debt,” he said. He turned back to me. His voice was steady now, stripped of all pretense. “Deeply. Dangerously. I had been gambling. Losing heavily. I began embezzling from the estate. Small amounts at first. Then larger. Elena noticed discrepancies. She investigated. She found the ledger. She confronted me that evening by the river. She said she would tell you. She said she would have me arrested. I begged her to wait. To give me time to repay. We argued. She threatened to call your father. I grabbed her arm to stop her… she slipped… and fell.”
“Murder,” I whispered.
“It was an accident!” he cried. “I never pushed her! I grabbed her. She lost her footing. It happened so fast. I reached for her. I tried to catch her. But the bank gave way.”
“And Julian saw,” I said. “And Father paid him. And protected you. And let Elena’s name be dragged through gossip instead of giving her justice.”
“Father could not bear to lose both of his sons,” my brother said quietly. “He chose to save me. Instead of her.”
I stared at him. At the brother I had loved and trusted all my life. He looked broken. Desperate. But not entirely sorry.
“And Vivienne?” I asked. “Did she know?”
He hesitated. “Elena told Vivienne she suspected something. Before she died. Vivienne did not know it was me… but she guessed. Afterward. She threatened to expose me unless I protected her. Gave her status. Kept her close. That is why she held the truth back. That is why she nearly killed Leo—”
“To destroy Elena’s bloodline,” I finished. “To clear the way. So she could take everything. With my brother beside her. Guilty and compromised.”
My brother nodded slowly. “She was blackmailing both of us. Me to stay silent. You to marry her. She played us all.”
Everything fell into place. Vivienne had known. She had protected my brother to protect herself. She had used his secret to climb. And when Leo stood in her path… she had nearly erased him too.
“I will call the police,” I said.
My brother paled. “Adrian… he was your brother too. I am your brother. We grew up together.”
“And Elena was my wife,” I said. “And Leo is my son. And you nearly cost me both.”
“I will turn myself in,” he said quietly. “But first… let me speak with Vivienne. She is the one who fueled this. She is the one who turned a mistake into a web of lies.”
I hesitated. Part of me wanted to do it myself. But part of me… still loved him. Still trusted him to finish what he had started.
“Go,” I said. “Bring her to the study. I will call the authorities. And then… we all answer for what we have done.”
May you like
He nodded. He walked past me. Toward the stairs. Toward Vivienne.
I watched him go. I lifted the telephone. My hand trembled against the cold plastic. I was about to destroy my family. But it was already destroyed. It had been the moment Elena fell into the river.
