Chapter 1

I sat in the dim light of the living room,
staring at the sleeping form of my daughter.
My phone buzzed on the coffee table,
a notification from my mother,
a casual photo of her and my nephews at the airport terminal.
The caption read:
"We made our flight,
no thanks to that little disaster."
My thumb hovered over the delete button,
but I stopped.
Instead,
I took a screenshot,
archiving it alongside the GPS location pin.
This was evidence.
This was a digital trail of their neglect.
For years,
I had been the family's silent banker,
funding their expensive vacations,
covering their sudden,
mysterious debts,
and playing the role of the successful,
uncomplaining daughter.
I thought if I gave enough,
they would eventually see Abigail as a person,
as their own flesh and blood.
But they didn't.
To them,
she was just an accessory to be discarded when inconvenient.
I went to my home office and opened my laptop.
I logged into the shared financial portal I managed for them.
They thought they were independent,
but they relied on my "loans" to keep their house afloat.
I started downloading every statement,
every transaction,
every desperate email asking for more money.
My hands were rock steady now.
The anger had distilled into a cold,
sharp clarity.
I looked at the bank account linked to my father’s brokerage.
It was tied to my own business credit,
a "temporary" favor I had done three years ago.
I began drafting a letter to my bank and to the authorities.
I wasn't just going to cut them off.
I was going to pull the rug out from under them.
If they wanted to prioritize a flight over an eight-year-old girl,
then they could enjoy the consequences of their financial incompetence.
I checked the time.
1:00 a.m.
They would be landing in Europe soon,
expecting a luxury rental villa.
Little did they know,
their credit cards were about to be declined in the middle of a foreign country.
I felt no guilt.
Only the satisfaction of a trap finally closing shut.
The silence of the house was no longer heavy.
It was the silence of a battlefield after the enemy had been defeated.
I closed my laptop and went back to check on Abigail.
She stirred in her sleep,
reaching out blindly for me.
I took her hand and promised her silently,
May you like
that from this moment on,
she would never again be sacrificed for the convenience of monsters.
