Chapter 2 - THE UNDERWORLD WHISPERS AND SERENA'S PANIC

Within twenty minutes of the explosive confrontation at the Hudson gala,
encrypted burner phones across the New York underworld were buzzing with frantic,
breathless messages.
The elusive,
untouchable logistics king Gabriel Cross had not only been married once before to a woman named Claire,
but he had fathered three legitimate male heirs who had just been unveiled in public.
In the dark,
smoke-filled backrooms of Little Italy and the heavily guarded penthouses of TriBeCa,
rival syndicate bosses realized that the invincible Cross empire suddenly possessed a fatal,
bleeding vulnerability.
For years,
Gabriel Cross had operated without attachments,
treating his personal life as an impenetrable fortress with zero leverage points for his enemies to exploit.
Now,
three five-year-old boys carried his blood,
his name,
and his unmistakable gray-green eyes into a world governed by blood feuds,
billion-dollar extortion,
and lethal turf wars.
Meanwhile,
inside the soundproofed rear cabin of the custom armored Maybach speeding through the rainy Manhattan streets,
an oppressive,
heavy silence hung thick in the air.
Claire sat on the plush leather upholstery,
her posture rigid and defensive,
keeping her three boys tucked safely between her and the window.
Gabriel sat across from them,
his dark eyes never leaving the faces of his sons,
who had fallen asleep one by one against Claire’s shoulders from the overwhelming exhaustion of the evening.
“You haven't changed your security protocols for them in five years,
” Gabriel finally broke the silence,
his voice low and dangerous.
“You raised my sons in a standard suburban house in Westchester with a single wooden fence and a standard alarm system,
Claire,
do you have any idea how insane that is,
” he demanded quietly.
Claire turned her head sharply,
glaring at him with eyes full of unyielding fire.
“And whose fault was that,
Gabriel,
did you expect me to send your business cards to the local nursery school while you were busy playing kingpin with your Italian associates and your Instagram-model mistress,
” she snapped back in a fierce whisper.
“I kept them safe precisely because I stayed away from you,
Gabriel,
because the moment your enemies figured out you had a family,
they would use them as collateral damage in your corporate wars,
” she added bitterly.
Gabriel flinched as if struck by a physical blow,
recognizing the cold,
undeniable truth in his words.
He had spent a decade making enemies who would happily burn Manhattan to the ground just to see him bleed.
Now,
those exact enemies were receiving alerts on their encrypted channels about three little boys who looked precisely like him.
“They are safe now,
” Gabriel said,
his voice dropping into a register of absolute,
terrifying finality.
“They will be living in the Cross fortress in Westchester,
surrounded by twenty-four-hour armed tactical details,
bulletproof glass,
and biometric perimeter scans,
” he declared.
“Like hell they are,
” Claire hissed,
leaning forward.
“I am not trading one cage for another,
Gabriel,
especially not a fortress where I am treated like an inconvenient prisoner.
”
“You are not a prisoner,
Claire,
you are the mother of my heirs,
which makes you the most heavily protected woman in the Western Hemisphere,
” Gabriel retorted smoothly.
While the Maybach glided toward the heavily fortified estate gates,
Serena Vale was sitting in the back of her rented black SUV,
her face twisted in a mask of hysterical fury.
Her phone was pressed against her ear as she dialed Dante Moretti,
the ruthless head of the Moretti crime syndicate and Gabriel’s most vicious rival.
“Dante,
you need to listen to me very carefully,
” Serena hissed into the receiver,
her voice shaking with adrenaline and rage.
“Gabriel just found out he has three legitimate sons with his ex-wife Claire,
and he has completely discarded me in favor of keeping them under his roof,
” she reported frantically.
On the other end of the line,
Dante Moretti let out a low,
gravelly laugh that sounded like stones grinding together in a cement mixer.
“Is that so,
Serena,
the great and invincible Gabriel Cross finally grew a heart and a nursery,
” Dante mocked,
his tone dripping with dark amusement.
“Listen to me,
Dante,
if Gabriel consolidates his empire with those three boys,
you will never touch Cross Freight or his shipping lanes again,
he will be completely untouchable,
” Serena urged desperately.
“Then perhaps it is time we test just how bulletproof our dear Gabriel really is,
” Dante murmured softly,
terminating the call before Serena could reply.
Back at the Westchester estate,
the massive iron gates swung open automatically,
admitting the Maybach into the sprawling,
heavily wooded sanctuary.
Gabriel stepped out first,
gently lifting the sleeping twins into his arms while Claire guided Leo up the sweeping stone steps toward the grand entrance.
As the heavy oak doors closed behind them,
May you like
shutting out the rainy night,
Gabriel knew the war for his family had only just begun.
