Chapter 4 - The Safe House on the Lake

The snow fell harder as the black heavy-duty SUV cut north along Route 8, pushing through the gathering drifts toward Lake Erie.

Inside the vehicle, the air was warm. In the middle row, Anna held Rosie close to her chest, feeding her fresh formula while Maddie slept soundly beside them, her small head resting in her mother’s lap. For the first time in three days, the tension in Maddie’s tiny frame had relaxed, her small fingers loosely holding her mother’s jacket sleeve.

Elliot sat in the front passenger seat, a encrypted laptop open on his knees. The screen reflected off his glasses—a cascade of red financial alerts, news headlines, and law enforcement bulletins.

"It's hit the press," Marcus said from the driver's seat, keeping his eyes on the whiteout conditions ahead. "Your board of directors just called an emergency meeting for tomorrow morning to remove you as CEO."

"Let them," Elliot said without looking up. "The board is filled with men who only care about quarterly yields. They can have the title. Right now, I’m hunting."

Anna leaned forward between the seats, her voice hushed so as not to wake Maddie. "Elliot, how are you going to prove Daniel did this? All the digital footprints point to your terminal."

"Daniel is smart, but he’s arrogant," Elliot explained, turning the laptop screen so she could see a series of complex code lines. "He spent nine years in hiding, using old off-shore laundering routes from the early 2000s. He thinks the system works the same way it did when he disappeared. He used an old intermediary bank in Panama to clear the thirty million."

"I know that bank," Anna said, her eyes lighting up with professional recognition. "Banco de Istmo. They were the ones involved in the 2015 shell companies I flagged."

"Exactly," Elliot nodded. "And what Daniel doesn't know is that three years ago, Whitaker Financial acquired Banco de Istmo’s parent company. I own their digital servers. He thinks he’s transferred the money into an untraceable vault, but he’s actually routed it directly into a honeypot server I built myself."

Anna stared at him, a faint, disbelieving smile breaking through her exhaustion. "You set a trap for off-shore money laundering?"

"I built it after Daniel died," Elliot admitted softly, his gaze drifting out toward the dark, snow-covered pines lining the highway. "I built it because, deep down... in a dark part of my mind I refused to acknowledge... I always suspected he hadn't died in that crash. I knew how ruthless he was. I built a system that would alert me if his specific financial signatures ever touched the market again."

"So you know where the money is?" Marcus asked.

"I know where the money went," Elliot said. "And more importantly, I know where Daniel has to go to physically collect the master bearer bonds. The wire transfer was just step one. To turn those credits into liquid cash, he has to present the physical decryption key at a private clearinghouse in Toronto tomorrow at noon."

"He’s crossing the border tonight," Marcus said, calculating the distance. "With the storm closing the main bridges, he’ll use the small commercial crossing at Niagara or a private charter out of Erie."

"He won't use an airport," Elliot said firmly. "He knows federal air marshals monitor private manifests. He’s going to use the lake."

Anna gasped. "Lake Erie? In this weather?"

"Our father kept a forty-foot commercial boat in a heated boathouse near Presque Isle," Elliot said, his jaw setting hard. "Daniel knows the combination. He knows the lake routes. He’s been using our family’s old estate as his staging ground."
