Chapter 5 - The Legal Mirage

Julian and Brenda sat in the plush leather chairs of the law firm’s waiting room, their legs crossed with impatience.

They had dressed for the occasion, wearing expensive clothes that they couldn't actually afford, paid for by the hope of the impending sale.

Caleb sat between them, his eyes darting around the room, feeling a sense of unease he couldn't quite name.

Julian tapped his foot against the polished floor, the sound echoing in the quiet, sterile room.

This is taking too long, Julian grumbled, glancing at his watch for the third time in ten minutes.

Brenda flipped through a magazine without reading it, her expression fixed in a mask of practiced indifference.

He’s probably just trying to delay us again, she said, though her voice lacked its usual bite.

The receptionist approached them, her face devoid of any professional warmth.

Mr. Miller will see you now, she said, gesturing toward the back office.

They stood up in unison, a synchronized movement born of shared greed.

They entered the office of the senior partner, a man who had known their father for decades.

He sat behind a large, mahogany desk, his expression unreadable behind his spectacles.

Arthur isn't here, the lawyer said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion.

Julian paused, his brow furrowing in confusion.

What do you mean he’s not here?

We had an appointment.

The lawyer leaned back, placing his hands on the desk.

He wasn't coming today, and honestly, you shouldn't be here either.

The documents you think you have are currently the subject of a federal investigation.

Julian’s face went pale, his jaw dropping in shock.

Investigation?

What kind of investigation?

The lawyer slid a folder across the desk, the contents filled with legal jargon that made Julian’s head spin.

It appears there are claims of elder abuse, financial coercion, and fraudulent document creation, the lawyer stated.

The assets associated with the Miller estate have been frozen pending a full review.

Brenda gasped, her hand flying to her mouth as the reality of the situation began to set in.

That’s impossible, she hissed, her voice trembling.

We didn't... we were just helping him.

The lawyer didn't blink, his gaze cold and unwavering.

The courts will decide that, but for now, you are all under a restraining order regarding the property.

Any attempt to claim the assets will result in immediate detention for questioning.

Julian looked at his siblings, his face twisted with rage and disbelief.

They had been so close, so very close to everything they wanted.

And in a single moment, the mirage had vanished, leaving them in the desert of their own making.

They were bankrupt, they were under investigation, and they had just lost their only leverage.

The lawyer watched them, his eyes filled with a subtle, dark amusement.

He knew exactly what Arthur had done, and he had been a willing accomplice in the final, perfect strike.

The children stood there, broken and desperate, realizing for the first time that they had never been the ones in control.

Their father was a ghost, a legend of cunning, and they were merely the fools he had left behind in the ruins.
