Chapter 9 - A New Dawn in Chapultepec

Six months later.
The dark, gloomy mansion in Lomas de Chapultepec was unrecognizable.
The heavy black velvet curtains that had blocked out the light for ten years were gone, replaced by thin, white linen drapes that danced in the warm afternoon breeze. The quiet, terrifying silence that had haunted the hallways had been replaced by the loud, joyous sound of a child’s laughter and the barking of a golden retriever puppy running across the terrace.
In the grand garden behind the house, a massive wooden playground had been built, complete with swings, slides, and a tiny playhouse shaped like a castle.
Alejandro sat at an outdoor patio table, wearing a simple linen shirt and jeans, reading a report on his tablet. He looked ten years younger. The sharp, bitter lines around his eyes were gone, replaced by a warm, relaxed expression.
Down on the grass, Sofía was running with the puppy, her cheeks bright pink with health. Thanks to the best pediatric specialists in the country, her asthma was fully managed, her lungs strong and clear.
Mariela walked out onto the patio carrying a tray of fresh lemonade and warm empanadas.
She was no longer the maid. Alejandro had established a multi-million-dollar charitable foundation in her name—The Mariela Foundation—which provided free medical care, asthma medication, and housing support to low-income mothers across Mexico. She managed the foundation’s operations, using the same quiet dedication she had once used to protect her daughter.
“She ate all her lunch today, Alejandro,” Mariela said with a smile, setting the tray on the table.
“Including the vegetables?” Alejandro asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Well... most of them,” Mariela laughed, sitting down in the chair opposite him.
Alejandro set his tablet down and looked at Mariela.
“The legal adoption documents were finalized this morning,” Alejandro said softly, sliding a folder across the table toward her.
Mariela opened the folder. Inside were the official state papers.
Sofía was now legally registered as Sofía Lucía de la Vega Cruz.
The document listed two legal parents: Alejandro de la Vega... and Mariela Cruz.
Mariela’s eyes filled with tears as she read the names. “Alejandro... you didn't have to do this. She is your blood daughter.”
“She is my blood,” Alejandro said, reaching across the table to cover Mariela’s hand with his own. “But you are her mother. You gave her breath when I wasn't there. You loved her when the world forgot her. We are her family now. Together.”
Mariela wiped a tear from her cheek, a deep, beautiful smile lighting up her face.
Down on the lawn, Sofía stopped playing with the puppy and looked up at the patio.
“Mami! Papi! Look!” she shouted, holding up a bright yellow dandelion she had pulled from the grass.
She ran up the stone steps, her small shoes clicking happily against the marble. She scrambled into Alejandro’s lap, holding the flower up to his face.
“It’s a wish flower!” Sofía beamed, her brown eyes dancing with joy. “Mami said if you blow the seeds, your wish comes true!”
Alejandro looked at his daughter—at her healthy, smiling face, at the small gold bracelet shining on her wrist, at the woman sitting beside them who had saved both of their lives.
He wrapped his arms around the little girl, kissing her forehead softly.

“I don't need to make a wish, mi vida,” Alejandro whispered, his heart full and complete for the first time in ten years.
“My wish is already sitting right here.”
