Chapter 10 - The Safe Haven

One year after four terrified little girls crawled beneath my table in a West Loop café, the Hayes estate was celebrating Lily's fifth birthday.

The grand backyard was filled with colorful balloons, a bouncing castle, a long table covered in presents, and the sound of children's laughter echoing under the shade of the grand oak trees.

Ethan was running through the grass with Thor and Bear, chased by Chloe and Maya, who were both wearing plastic princess crowns. Charlotte was sitting near the patio table, showing her sketchpad to a group of friends from her new school, her face lit with pride.

I stood on the stone veranda, holding a glass of iced tea, watching the scene before me.

Marcus walked up the steps, carrying a leather tablet under his arm. He looked at the playing children, then at me, offering a quiet nod of respect.

"Perimeter is clear, Boss," Marcus reported smoothly. "Markovic's old territory has been fully integrated into the legal logistics trust. Mercer filed for bankruptcy last week and left the state. There isn't a threat within three hundred miles of this house."

"Good," I said, taking a sip of my tea. "Keep the team discreet, Marcus. Today is about Lily."

"Understood, sir," Marcus smiled, turning to walk back toward the gate house.

I felt a soft pair of arms wrap around my waist from behind.

Clara leaned her cheek against my back, letting out a long, contented sigh. She was wearing a simple yellow summer dress, her auburn hair falling loosely around her shoulders.

"What are you thinking about?" she murmured, sliding around to stand beside me, resting her hand on my chest.

I looked out over the yard—at my son, at my four daughters, at the peaceful, fortified paradise we had created out of fear and chaos.

"I'm thinking about that afternoon in the café," I said softly, covering her hand with mine. "I'm thinking about how four little girls saved my life."

Clara lifted her eyes to mine, her smile warm and brilliant as the summer sun. "They didn't save you, Alexander. They just recognized the father you were meant to be."

From across the lawn, Lily's voice rang out, loud, clear, and full of pure, unadulterated joy.

"Daddy! Come play in the castle!"

I looked down at Clara, whose eyes danced with quiet delight.

"Duty calls," I said with a slight smile.

I set my teacup down on the veranda table, took my wife's hand in mine, and walked down the stone steps into the bright, safe light of our home.
