Chapter 14 - Carmen’s Last Bargain

Carmen offered a deal.

Full cooperation in exchange for protection and consideration at sentencing.

Prosecutors made no promises regarding charges involving Olivia.

Carmen accepted anyway.

Her first disclosure recovered most of the missing education money.

It had been routed through Howard’s companies and then into an escrow account intended to appear as Jessica’s hidden asset after the planned divorce.

The money was frozen.

For Zayden, recovering it mattered less than watching Carmen lose control of it.

The second disclosure identified Dr. Sloan.

He had created fraudulent evaluations for years.

Police arrested him outside his clinic.

The third exposed Peter Lorne.

He was found in a motel near Tucson carrying forty thousand dollars and two passports.

The fourth disclosure concerned Sebastian Ward.

Carmen confirmed he was J.

“At least that was the name I knew.”

“Is he alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“You communicated with him.”

“Through dead drops and devices.”

“When did you last see him?”

“Six years ago.”

“Does he know Raymond is alive?”

“I assume.”

“Does he know where Raymond is?”

“If he did, Raymond would be dead.”

Zayden sat across from her during one final monitored conversation.

Not because investigators needed him.

Because he needed something.

An answer that had nothing to do with crimes.

“Did you ever love Dad?”

Carmen looked surprised.

“Of course.”

“Did you love me?”

She seemed offended.

“I sacrificed everything for you.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“You had opportunities because of me.”

“Raymond raised me.”

“I chose Raymond.”

“For his money?”

“For safety.”

“From Jonathan?”

“At first.”

“And later?”

Carmen looked down.

“Your father was kind.”

“Then why destroy him?”

“He tried to leave.”

“So?”

Her face hardened.

“You don’t understand what it means to spend decades building a life and have someone decide you no longer belong inside it.”

“You could have divorced.”

“And become what? Raymond’s former wife? A footnote beside the empire I helped protect?”

“There it is.”

“What?”

“It was always about your place.”

Carmen said nothing.

Zayden stood.

She suddenly called his name.

He stopped.

“Jessica’s mother left something.”

“What?”

“A jewelry box.”

Zayden turned back.

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I know Diane gave Rachel a box. Rachel later told Raymond it was safe.”

“What was inside?”

“The original New Horizons index.”

“The files?”

“Not the files. The map to them.”

Zayden stared.

“Why didn’t you tell Sebastian?”

Carmen’s expression changed.

“Because I wanted it first.”

“Why?”

“For leverage.”

“Against him.”

“Yes.”

For the first time, Zayden understood Carmen’s full strategy.

She wanted Jessica discredited and Olivia controlled not simply because Sebastian ordered it.

Carmen planned to locate Raymond’s archive, then use it to free herself from Sebastian.

Everyone had been a piece.

Jessica.

Olivia.

Zayden.

Even Carmen’s own allies.

“What does the jewelry box look like?”

“Dark walnut. Brass corners.”

Jessica had one.

She had inherited it from her mother.

It sat in storage among Diane’s belongings.

They retrieved it that evening.

Empty except for earrings and old letters.

No secret compartment.

No index.

Nothing.

Jessica turned it over.

There was a small inscription beneath the base.

For J, when she is old enough to ask.

J.

Jessica.

Her mother had left it for her.

Zayden examined the lining.

Olivia crawled onto the rug beside them.

“Why are you breaking Grandma Diane’s box?”

“We’re not breaking it,” Jessica said. “We’re trying to see if she hid something.”

Olivia tilted her head.

“Like Grandma Carmen’s drawer?”

Zayden smiled faintly.

“Exactly.”

Olivia picked up the box.

Children do not examine objects the way adults do.

Adults look for screws.

Seams.

Locks.

Olivia shook it.

Something clicked.

Zayden and Jessica froze.

He removed the bottom padding.

Nothing.

Olivia shook it again.

Click.

The brass corner.

Jessica pressed it.

A narrow wooden strip released.

Inside lay a piece of folded paper.

Jessica’s hands trembled as she opened it.

There were no names.

Only numbers.

Forty-seven.

Twelve.

Nine.

Thirty-one.

Eight.

And coordinates.

Vargas entered them into a map.

The location appeared in northern Arizona.

Near Flagstaff.

Less than four miles from Raymond’s cabin.

Carmen’s warning returned to Zayden.

The little girl inherits the truth.

Maybe not legally.

Maybe literally.

Diane gave the box to Jessica.

Jessica eventually gave it to Olivia as a keepsake.

Without knowing what it contained.

A chain of women unknowingly carried the map for nearly two decades.

They drove north with federal agents before dawn.

The coordinates led to an abandoned observatory building on private land once owned by Copper Meridian.

Behind a false wall, investigators found a steel door.

Inside sat shelves.

Boxes.

Hard drives.

Hundreds of paper files.

The New Horizons archive.

Raymond had preserved everything.

Zayden stood in the doorway staring at decades of secrets.

Then a light turned on behind him.

Everyone spun.

An old man stood at the end of the corridor.

Thin.

Silver-haired.

Scar across his cheek.

Zayden knew him instantly.

“Dad.”

Raymond Ferris looked at his son for the first time in four years.

May you like

His eyes filled.

“Hello, son.”
