Chapter 10 - The First Safe Sunrise

The snows of Chicago had long since melted, replaced by the bright, hot sun of a Midwestern summer that turned the park along the lake into a vibrant carpet of green grass and yellow wildflowers.
Alessandro Duca stood on the wooden deck of his estate’s boat house, a simple ceramic mug of espresso between his hands. The morning air was quiet, carrying the clean, fresh scent of the lake and the sweet, rich aroma of the dark roast coffee.
There were no security guards standing on the lawn, no armored cars parked in the driveway, and no meetings scheduled with New York enforcers. The city was quiet, busy, and full of life—his life.
He walked down the wooden steps onto the sand, the cool water of the lake licking at his boots as he stopped near the water's edge. He took a slow, peaceful sip of his coffee, letting the dark, bitter liquid warm his chest before he looked out at the wide, open horizon before him.
A small, white sailboat was skimming across the water in the distance, its sails bright against the blue sky, carrying a family toward the harbor.
Alessandro raised his mug toward the boat, a quiet, knowing nod passing between him and the wind. He had spent his life building a fortress of wealth and fear to keep the world at bay, believing that the Duca name was a shield that could survive any storm.
But as he looked at the quiet water, he knew the truth.
True power wasn't something you could store in a vault or enforce with a gun. It was the ability to protect a single, fragile life. It was the strength to say no to the people who wanted to use you, and yes to the quiet, difficult work of love.
He took another sip of his coffee. The taste was dark, rich, and perfectly ordinary.

And as the sun rose higher over the lake, casting a long, golden ribbon of light across the quiet water, Alessandro Duca knew that the morning was finally safe.
He was home.
