Chapter 10 - THE RECKONING AT THE PODIUM

The night of the launch party arrived,

a spectacular event held at the top of the city's most exclusive skyscraper.

Glass walls offered a panoramic view of the sparkling city skyline below,

a view that Grant believed he ruled.

He stood near the stage,

clinking glasses with wealthy investors,

his face flushed with excitement and expensive champagne.

Victoria stood beside him,

glowing in a silver dress that looked like liquid starlight,

the stolen ring prominent on her finger.

I entered the room unnoticed,

wearing a simple,

elegant navy dress,

blending into the background.

I spotted Arthur Vance standing near the tech booth,

he gave me a brief,

solemn nod.

The plan was in motion.

At nine o'clock,

the lights dimmed,

and a spotlight focused on the stage.

Grant stepped up to the podium,

beaming,

the microphone catching his confident breath.

"Thank you,

everyone,

for being here tonight,"

he began,

his voice echoing through the silent room.

"Tonight,

we celebrate not just the launch of a new investment firm,

but the dawn of a new era of prosperity."

"With the support of the Vance family,

we are poised to reach unprecedented heights."

He looked at Victoria,

who blew him a kiss from the front row.

"And I want to thank a very special woman,

who has shown me what the future can truly look like."

The crowd applauded,

and I watched from the shadows,

feeling my heart beat steady and strong.

"Before we begin the presentation,"

Grant continued,

gesturing to the massive projector screen behind him,

"I want to show you the foundation of our success."

He clicked the remote in his hand,

expecting to see his company's new logo and growth projections.

Instead,

the screen flashed black,

and then a document appeared.

It was the bank statement,

clearly showing the seventy-two thousand dollar transfer from Lily's college trust.

A murmur rippled through the crowd,

confused,

hushed whispers filling the grand hall.

Grant's smile froze,

his eyes widening as he stared at the screen.

"Ah,

there seems to be a technical issue,"

he stammered,

clicking the remote frantically.

The screen changed again,

displaying a detailed list of his shell companies,

and the massive debts he owed to his previous investors.

The murmurs grew louder,

turning into gasps of shock.

"Turn it off!"

Grant shouted to the tech booth,

his face turning a deep,

suffocated red.

"Turn the screen off now!"

But the screen changed one last time,

displaying the photograph of him and Victoria inside the jewelry store,

followed by the text messages detailing their affair and his plan to use the Vance fortune to cover his fraud.

The silence that followed was absolute,

May you like

broken only by the sound of Grant's heavy,

panicked breathing.
