CHAPTER 5 — The First Day of the Rest of My Life

The moving trucks pulled away from the Greenwich house.

I stood on the sidewalk for a moment.

The house looked imposing.

Unwelcoming.

I didn't regret leaving it.

I stepped into my new life.

It was simple.

It was quiet.

The boxes were stacked everywhere.

But it felt like home.

I spent the morning unpacking.

Lily helped me organize her books.

She was happy.

She loved the new neighborhood.

She loved the park nearby.

I went to the kitchen.

I made a cup of coffee.

The smell was rich and comforting.

I sat by the window.

The sunlight poured in.

It warmed my face.

I opened the newspaper.

The headlines about Graham were smaller now.

The world was moving on.

And so was I.

I had an appointment with a new board for the foundation.

We were going to focus on education.

Real, lasting, impactful education.

No more galas.

No more glitter.

Just work.

Meaningful, quiet work.

I felt a sense of purpose I hadn't felt in years.

I looked down at my hands.

They were steady.

They were mine.

I thought about the bridal shoes.

They were still at the evidence locker.

I hoped they would stay there forever.

I walked into the garden.

It needed work.

But it had potential.

I knelt in the dirt.

The soil was cool beneath my fingernails.

I started to pull the weeds.

It was satisfying.

One by one.

Clearing the ground for something new to grow.

I could hear Lily playing inside.

She was humming a song.

It was a happy song.

I smiled.

I had done it.

I had navigated the storm.

I had survived the wreck.

I was standing on the other side.

The sun climbed higher in the sky.

The city around me began to wake up.

Life was moving forward.

And for the first time in a long time, I was moving with it.

I stood up and brushed the dirt from my jeans.

I looked at the house.

It was perfect.

I was home.

And the rest of the life in front of me was wide open.

May you like

It was beautiful.

It was mine.
