control

Chapter 2

The massive front door finally clicked shut,

leaving an eerie,

unsettling silence in the previously loud,

vibrant mansion.

My mother stood frozen in the center of the room,

her chest heaving with deep,

angry breaths,

her face distorted with uncontrollable rage.

Gabriela crossed her arms defensively,

glaring at Esther with undisguised venom,

refusing to accept any responsibility for the disastrous evening.

"You have completely lost your mind,"

my mother screamed,

pointing a trembling finger at my chest,

her carefully crafted composure entirely shattered.

"You humiliated your own flesh and blood for this pathetic,

ungrateful girl,"

Gabriela chimed in,

her voice dripping with toxic arrogance,

trying desperately to regain control of the narrative.

I looked at the two women who shared my last name,

feeling absolutely nothing but deep disgust,

a heavy,

hollow emptiness where familial love used to reside.

"I am not the one who lost my mind,"

I replied calmly,

keeping Esther safely tucked against my side,

shielding her from their verbal assault.

"I simply woke up from a long nightmare,

and I finally see you both for what you truly are,

cruel,

selfish parasites."

Esther sobbed quietly,

her small frame shaking with leftover adrenaline,

completely overwhelmed by the explosive,

unprecedented confrontation.

"We gave you everything,"

my mother cried out dramatically,

playing the victim,

a manipulative role she had perfected over many decades.

"And I paid for absolutely everything,"

I shot back fiercely,

reminding her of the undeniable,

harsh financial truth that she loved to ignore.

"This massive house,

the luxury cars in the driveway,

the designer clothes on your backs,

it all came from my company,

my sweat,

my endless hard work."

Gabriela flinched visibly,

knowing I was completely right,

her eyes darting nervously toward the lavish surroundings that she cherished so much.

"Pack your things immediately,"

I told them,

my tone cold,

leaving absolutely no room for any negotiation or debate.

"You have until tomorrow morning to vacate my property entirely,

because I am selling this cursed mansion,

and cutting off your generous monthly allowances."

My mother gasped loudly,

clutching her chest in dramatic fashion,

as if I had physically struck her across the face.

"You cannot do this to your own family,

your own mother,"

she pleaded,

her fierce arrogance suddenly melting into pure,

pathetic desperation.

"Watch me do it,"

I whispered coldly,

turning my back on them without a second thought,

and gently guiding my terrified wife toward the grand staircase.

We walked to our master bedroom,

where I packed only what we truly needed,

leaving behind the superficial luxury that had trapped us for so long.

I grabbed my important business documents,

a few simple changes of clothes,

and Esther's most treasured personal belongings.

As we walked out the front door together,

stepping out into the crisp,

cool night air,

I felt a massive,

suffocating weight finally lift off my tired shoulders.

I opened the car door for Esther,

helping her inside gently,

promising myself that she would never touch dirty dishwater again.

I started the engine,

driving away from the toxic prison,

May you like

never looking back at the dark house that had brought us so much secret pain,

knowing we were finally free.
