Chapter 6 - The Scavenger HuntAcross town, far removed from the pristine glass towers of Fifth Avenue, the rain battered against the cracked windows of a dismal, cramped studio apartment in the Upper West Side.

Ethan sat on the edge of a sagging sofa, staring blankly at the peeling wallpaper. The apartment belonged to a college acquaintance who had pity on him for exactly twenty-four hours before demanding a cash security deposit he couldn't pay. His designer suit, once tailored on Savile Row, was now wrinkled and damp from walking three miles in the downpour after his credit cards were systematically declined by every bank in the city.
His phone, resting on the wobbly coffee table, buzzed violently.
Ethan flinched as if struck. He reached out with trembling fingers and picked it up. It wasn't a text from Vanessa—her number had been blocked, and her apartment building manager had threatened to call the police if Ethan showed up in her lobby again. It was a push notification from a financial news app:
BREAKING: Whitmore Global Announces Massive Shift in Capital Allocation; CEO Claire Whitmore Reallocates $40M Luxury Budget to Public Housing.
"Damn her," Ethan hissed, hurling the phone against the opposite wall. The screen shattered into a spiderweb of dead pixels, sliding pathetically down the baseboard.
He buried his face in his hands, his chest heaving with a suffocating mix of rage and terror. He had everything. He was a Whitmore. He was supposed to inherit the entire corporate fortress. How had it all slipped through his fingers? How had Claire—quiet, domestic, unassuming Claire—outmaneuvered him so completely?
A sharp, demanding knock echoed from the apartment door.
Ethan froze. He didn't move, praying that whoever was outside would assume the unit was empty and go away. But the knocking came again, louder and more insistent, accompanied by the jangle of heavy keys.
"Open up, Mr. Whitmore! We know you're in there!" a gruff voice called out.
The lock clicked, and the door swung open. Two men in dark suits stepped into the cramped living room, flanked by the apartment’s frantic landlord.
"Who are you? You can't just barge in here!" Ethan stammered, scrambling backward until he hit the back of the sofa.
The lead man flashed a silver badge and a federal court order. "Ethan Whitmore? I'm Special Agent Vance, FBI Financial Crimes Unit. You're being served with an expanded asset seizure warrant. Pursuant to federal court order 44-B, all remaining personal assets, vehicles, secondary bank accounts, and high-value luxury goods purchased with embezzled corporate funds are subject to immediate confiscation."
Ethan’s jaw dropped. "Wait—you can't do that! Those watches, those paintings... those were gifts! Some of them were mine before the commercial division restructuring!"
"According to the forensic audit provided by Whitmore Global's legal counsel this morning, every single luxury item in your possession was acquired using fraudulent wire transfers funneled through offshore shell companies between 2023 and 2026," Agent Vance recited coldly, gesturing to the second agent, who was already inspecting the designer luggage piled by the door. "Pack whatever personal clothing you need for the next forty-eight hours. You're required to surrender your passport to federal marshals by tomorrow morning pending your arraignment."
"No... no, please," Ethan begged, the last shred of his dignity evaporating as he slid down onto his knees on the threadbare carpet. "Listen to me. I was set up! My grandfather—he manipulated the trust! He wanted Claire to take over! I'm the victim here!"

Agent Vance looked down at the disgraced heir with undisguised contempt. "Tell it to the judge, Mr. Whitmore."
As the federal agents systematically cataloged and boxed up the remaining material symbols of his stolen wealth, Ethan realized the brutal, inescapable truth. The world of high finance didn't care about his pedigree, his heritage, or his excuses. In the end, he was just another white-collar criminal caught in the gears of a machine he thought he controlled.
