CHAPTER 16: THE HOUSE THAT REMEMBERED

My father met me outside. "Why are you here?" I showed him the address Andrew had written. His face changed. "Come inside." That response told me he knew more than I did.

We entered Nathan's old bedroom. My father moved a bookshelf and exposed a section of wall covered by newer plaster. "After Nathan died, someone broke into this room. Nothing appeared missing. I repaired the damage." I stared at him. "And you never wondered why?" He looked ashamed. "Mercer had already threatened you. I was scared."

I broke through the plaster.

Behind it was a small steel compartment.

Inside sat three notebooks, a hard drive, and an old photograph of Nathan and me as children. On the back, Nathan had written: If Zee ever finds this, tell her I was trying to keep her out of it.

The notebooks revealed Nathan had uncovered something beyond stolen military hardware. Shepherd's shell companies were purchasing land near ports, data centers, and communications hubs. The transactions weren't designed only to make money. They created private control over infrastructure that government agencies depended on.

Nathan had called it "the second government."

More disturbing was a list of civilian companies financing the purchases. One belonged to my father.

I looked at him.

He sat down heavily.

"I didn't know."

His real estate company had sold properties to Richard Sterling's network for years. He believed they were ordinary corporate transactions. When Nathan discovered the pattern, he confronted him. My father dismissed him as paranoid.

"The last conversation I had with your brother was an argument," Dad whispered. "He told me I cared more about money than my own family."

I said nothing.

"Three hours later, he died."

For the first time, I understood why my father had become obsessed with wealth and appearances after Nathan's death. It wasn't confidence. It was avoidance.

Then we found a final page written the morning Nathan died.

Dad isn't involved. He was used. If something happens, Zariah must know that Andrew is alive.

My father stared at the sentence.

"You knew Andrew was alive?" I asked.

"No."

"Then Nathan did."

The hard drive contained a video call between Nathan and Andrew. Nathan demanded his biological father return and tell me the truth. Andrew refused, claiming his presence would put everyone at risk.

Nathan became furious.

"If you keep hiding, they'll eventually come for her anyway."

Andrew replied, "Zariah is safer if she thinks I'm dead."

Nathan's final words were brutal.

"You're not protecting her. You're protecting yourself."

The recording ended.

My phone rang.

Andrew.

"Where are you?" I asked.

"Finishing it."

"Finishing what?"

"The infrastructure Nathan discovered."

Andrew had spent nine years infiltrating the financial network beneath Shepherd. Harrow's arrest exposed the leadership, but billions remained hidden through shell corporations. Andrew intended to destroy the servers controlling those accounts.

"Where?"

He hesitated.

I immediately understood.

"Belgrade."

The same city where my reactivation began.

Andrew confirmed it. The cryptanalyst I rescued had discovered the server architecture. Shepherd kidnapped him because he could access it. My mission had unknowingly recovered the only person capable of exposing the financial network.

"Miller's alive," Andrew said.

I froze.

Sterling had told me Miller died after Mercer visited him.

"Where is he?"

"With me."

Then gunfire exploded through the call.

Andrew cursed.

"Zariah, don't come."

The line disconnected.

I was already moving.

General Sterling answered on the first ring.

"I need an aircraft."

"Where?"

I looked once at Nathan's photograph.

"Belgrade."

Sterling went silent.

Then his old command voice returned.

"Wheels up in ninety minutes."

I left the estate without looking back.

This time, I wasn't chasing my family's past.

I was going to end it.
