Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Pretender

In the weeks that followed,
the justice system moved swiftly and ruthlessly.
Victoria’s trial became the scandal of the century,
drawing national media coverage.
Evidence presented by Inspector Vance showed a paper trail of corruption,
arson,
attempted murder,
and illegal medical confinement.
Dr. Harrison lost his medical license and received a twenty-year sentence for falsifying records and administering illegal narcotics.
Victoria was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole,
her family name completely erased from the board of directors.
On the day the verdict was delivered,
Evelyn stood outside the courthouse,
wearing an elegant white suit.
The media swarmed around her,
microphones thrusting forward as reporters shouted questions.
“Mrs. Vance!
How does it feel to return from the dead?”
one reporter yelled above the noise.
Evelyn took a deep breath,
holding Andrew’s hand tightly as she faced the sea of cameras.
“I did not return from the dead,”
Evelyn spoke clearly,
her voice echoing through the microphones.
“I was never truly gone.
Love is something that fire cannot burn,
and lies cannot erase.
I am simply a mother who found her way back home.”
The crowd of reporters fell silent,
moved by the quiet power of her words.
Andrew smiled proudly at his wife,
leading her toward the waiting vehicle.
As the car pulled away from the courthouse,
Evelyn looked out the window at the city passing by.
The weight of the past three years seemed to lift from her shoulders,
dissolving into the cool breeze.
The maid’s apron was gone,
May you like
the terror was gone,
and the darkness had finally surrendered to the light.
