Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at the Gates

We moved up the stairs,

our steps silent on the concrete steps.

The door to the main office was slightly ajar,

revealing a spacious room filled with old desks and filing cabinets.

Aoife was standing by the window,

her cream silk robe replaced by a sharp designer suit.

She held the black leather ledger in her hands,

clutching it like a shield.

Kieran stood near her,

his face pale and sweating despite the cold air.

“We need to leave now,

Aoife,”

Kieran urged.

“Salvatore’s men are waiting at the terminal.”

“If we stay here,

we are sitting ducks.”

“We leave when I say we leave,”

Aoife barked,

her eyes flashing with anger.

“I did not betray my family’s alliance just to run like a dog.”

Killian stepped through the doorway,

his heavy boots making a deliberate,

loud sound against the floorboards.

“Then you should have stayed in bed,

Aoife,”

he said,

his voice dripping with malice.

Kieran spun around,

his hand reaching for his weapon,

but he froze when he saw the barrel of Killian’s gun pointed at his chest.

Aoife gasped,

taking a step backward,

her face turning as white as her silk robe.

“Killian,”

she breathed,

her voice trembling.

“How...?”

“You thought you could buy my driver with a few promises?”

Killian asked,

his eyes locked on Kieran.

“You thought ten years of loyalty could be erased by a Callahan bribe?”

“He offered me a seat at the table,

Killian,”

Kieran spat,

his voice filled with resentment.

“I was tired of being your dog.”

“I was tired of cleaning up your messes while you sat in your mansion.”

“You were a brother to me,

Kieran,”

Killian said softly,

though his hand remained rock-steady.

“But you forgot one simple rule.”

“And what is that?”

Kieran sneered.

“The devil does not share his throne,”

Killian replied.

In a flash of movement,

Kieran lunged for cover behind a desk,

May you like

drawing his weapon.

The room exploded into a deafening roar as gunfire erupted.
