Chapter 5 - THE GALA OF WHISPERS

The annual Whitaker Legacy Gala was the social event of the year,
a glittering night of philanthropy,
wealth,
and whispered secrets.
Every major investor,
politician,
and socialite in Charleston would be there,
drinking expensive champagne and admiring the family empire.
Grant insisted we attend together,
to maintain the illusion of our perfect marriage until the divorce papers were ready.
"We need to look united,
Claire,"
he had told me that morning,
his voice tight with anxiety.
"The board is already nervous about the recent market fluctuations,
we can't give them any reason to doubt us."
"Of course,
darling,"
I had replied,
"I will be the perfect wife."
I chose a emerald green silk gown,
a color of envy and cold calculation,
that clung to my figure and made my eyes look piercingly bright.
When we arrived at the historic ballroom,
the cameras flashed,
capturing our practiced smiles.
Grant held my waist,
his grip tight,
as if he could hold his crumbling world together by sheer force.
But as the night wore on,
I noticed a familiar figure slipping through the crowd.
Madison was there,
wearing a stunning,
dramatic black dress that practically screamed for attention.
She wasn't on the official guest list,
but as Grant's "assistant,"
she had easily secured entry.
She watched us from across the room,
her eyes burning with jealousy as she saw Grant standing by my side.
I smiled at her,
a sweet,
condescending smile that drove her visibly mad.
I watched her whisper something to a waiter,
who then approached Grant with a note.
Grant read it,
his face tightening,
and he excused himself to go to the restroom.
I followed him at a distance,
discreetly navigating the crowd.
Instead of the restroom,
Grant slipped into the private library upstairs,
where the noise of the party was muted.
I stood outside the heavy oak door,
listening through the slight crack.
"What are you doing here,
Madison?"
Grant's voice was a low,
angry hiss.
"You weren't supposed to come tonight."
"I wanted to see you,
Grant,"
she replied,
her voice dripping with mock sweetness.
"I wanted to see how much longer I have to play the secret mistress."
"Claire signed the NDA,
didn't she?"
"Why are you still parading her around like she's your queen?"
"It takes time,
Madison,"
Grant explained,
his voice strained.
"We have to transfer the final funds from the Vanguard account before we can announce the split."
"If the board suspects anything before the money is clear,
we'll lose everything."
"I don't care about the board,"
she countered,
"I care about our child."
"I care about the future you promised me."
I leaned closer to the door,
my phone in my hand,
recording every single word of their conversation.
"I know,
I know,"
Grant said,
trying to soothe her.
"Just give me two more weeks."
"The Vanguard transfer will be complete,
and we can leave."
"Two weeks,"
Madison agreed,
"or I go to the press myself,
and tell them about the money and the baby."
"Don't threaten me,
Madison,"
Grant warned,
his voice turning dangerous.
"We are in this together."
I slipped away before they could emerge,
my heart racing with excitement.
I had them.
I had Grant admitting to corporate theft,
and Madison blackmailing him,
all captured on a single,
crystal-clear audio file.

The trap was set,
and the bait was about to be taken.
