Chapter 11 - THE FALLING MASK

Two weeks later,
the courtroom was quiet as the judge read the final decree of divorce.
Nathaniel sat across from me,
wearing a cheap,
off-the-rack suit that was too big for him,
his hair unkempt,
his eyes hollow.
He looked ten years older,
the confidence that had once defined him completely gone,
replaced by a desperate,
hunted look.
He did not look at me,
he kept his eyes fixed on the table,
his fingers tracing the wood pattern.
When the judge pronounced the marriage dissolved,
giving me full control of the joint property and the company shares,
Nathaniel did not even blink.
He had lost everything,
and he knew it.
As we stood up to leave,
he caught my eye for a brief second,
a silent plea for mercy in his gaze.
I did not offer him any,
I simply turned and walked out of the room,
my heels making a sharp,
final sound on the marble floor.
Daniel was waiting for me in the lobby,
holding a folder of new contracts from our European partners.
“The board just approved the new budget,”
he said,
smiling.
“We are ready to break ground on the resort next month.”
“Good,”
I said,
taking the folder from him.
“Let’s make sure we do it right.”
Sienna was standing near the exit,
waiting for her lawyer,
looking small and lost in the grand architecture of the courthouse.
She saw me,
and for a moment,
I thought she was going to speak,
to ask for forgiveness,
or perhaps for a job.
But I kept walking,
my eyes passing over her as if she were made of glass,
entirely transparent,
entirely empty.
She had wanted my life,
but she had only managed to copy the surface,
without ever understanding the strength required to maintain it.
The door of the courthouse opened to a bright,
clear afternoon,
the sky blue and cloudless,
the air fresh.
I took a deep breath,
feeling the warmth of the sun on my face,
the city bustling around me with a new energy.
I was no longer Claire Whitmore,
the wife of Nathaniel,
the quiet partner in a fraudulent empire.
I was Claire Whitmore,
the architect,
May you like
the leader,
the owner of my own destiny.
