Chapter 10 - The Family We Choose

Six months later.

The summer sun shone brightly over the manicured gardens of the Moretti estate. The air was warm, filled with the sweet scent of blooming roses and freshly cut grass.

On the paved patio near the swimming pool, Ethan stood upright, holding a wooden walking cane in his right hand. He took one slow, deliberate step forward, then another, his young face concentrated in intense effort.

“Look, Lily! Three steps without holding the railing!” Ethan yelled triumphantly, a massive grin lighting up his face.

“I see it!” I laughed, clapping my hands from the outdoor sofa. “Dr. Vance said you’d be running by autumn, and you’re proving her right!”

Dr. Vance stood nearby with a clip chart, nodding approvingly as Ethan practiced his physical therapy exercises with a dedicated trainer.

I leaned back against the plush cushions, taking a sip of iced lemonade.

I looked down at my outfit—a crisp white linen dress, a gold watch on my wrist, and a simple silver chain around my neck carrying my father’s signet ring. Next month, I would be enrolling as a freshman at Columbia University, studying corporate law to continue my father’s legacy.

Footsteps sounded on the stone patio.

Vincent walked out from the library glass doors. He wore a casual navy polo shirt, looking relaxed, younger, and happier than he ever had in the dark days of winter.

He walked over, sitting down in the armchair across from me.

“The university housing forms arrived today,” Vincent mentioned casually, taking a sip from his own glass. “Though I told the dean that you would be commuting from the estate via private driver.”

I raised an eyebrow, smirking at him. “Are you trying to keep me in a golden cage, Mr. Moretti?”

Vincent chuckled—a low, rich sound that echoed across the quiet patio.

“Not a cage, Lily,” Vincent replied smoothly, looking out at his son who was currently cheering as he managed to kick a soccer ball toward the lawn. “A fortress. You saved my son on a frozen night in Central Park. You gave him your coat when you had nothing else to give. In return, this family will give you the world.”

He reached into his pocket and placed a small velvet box on the table between us.

I opened it. Resting inside was a custom-crafted gold signet ring engraved with the crowned lion of the Moretti family, with a small letter L discreetly etched into the inner band.

“In our world,” Vincent said softly, his dark eyes looking directly into mine with absolute sincerity, “family isn't just about the blood you’re born with. It’s about the people who stand beside you when the storm hits.”

I picked up the heavy ring, sliding it onto my right pointer finger. It fit perfectly.

I looked out at the sunny garden, at Ethan laughing in the grass, at Silas standing guard near the gates with a peaceful smile, and at the man who had given me a second chance at life.

I was no longer the invisible homeless girl hiding behind dumpsters in the freezing cold.

I was Lily Moretti. And I was finally home.
