Chapter 3 - The Unravelling of the Corporate Cabal

The atmosphere in the grand ballroom had shifted from celebration to a lockdown,

The doors were sealed,

The security guards stood at every exit like sentinels of a prison,

The guests were huddled together,

Whispering nervously among themselves,

Fear had replaced the festive cheer,

And the air was thick with the scent of spilled alcohol and nervous sweat,

Julian stood in the center of the room,

He was not the man who had walked down the aisle only moments ago,

He was cold,

Calculated,

And completely devoid of the softness he had once displayed,

Marcus,

The CFO,

Had realized something was wrong,

He was trying to slip toward the service entrance,

His movements fluid,

Almost invisible to the untrained eye,

But Julian had seen him,

He had seen the hesitation,

The way Marcus checked his watch,

And the way he looked at the exit,

"Stop him,"

Julian said,

His voice wasn't loud,

But it carried through the room,

Cutting through the noise,

Two of his personal guards intercepted Marcus before he could reach the heavy,

Oak doors,

"Let me go!"

Marcus shouted,

His face reddening,

"This is kidnapping,

Julian,

You have no right to hold us here,

You’re losing your mind!"

Julian walked toward him,

The sound of his polished shoes clicking on the marble floor like a countdown,

He stopped a few feet away from the man who had been his brother-in-arms for a decade,

"Kidnapping?"

Julian echoed,

A humorless chuckle escaping his lips,

"You were planning my murder,

Marcus,

You and my lovely wife,

Do you really think I’m going to let you walk out of here because of a little thing like kidnapping laws?"

He pulled the phone from Chloe’s hand and held it up,

The screen was still bright,

The video of Elena in the preparation room playing on a loop,

It was a haunting loop,

A digital ghost that wouldn't stop screaming,

"I have it all,"

Julian said,

His voice low and dangerous,

"I have the conversations,

The emails,

The bank transfers that you thought were untraceable,

I have the blueprint for your little coup,"

Marcus went pale,

The arrogance in his eyes flickering and dying,

"You couldn't have,"

He stammered,

"Everything was encrypted,

Everything was wiped,

How?"

He looked at Chloe,

Who was standing behind Julian,

Her head held high,

"She’s just a maid,"

Marcus spat,

"She’s nothing!"

"She’s the only reason I’m standing here,"

Julian countered,

His eyes flashing,

"And she’s smarter than both of you combined,

She’s been working with my legal team for weeks,

Tracking your movements,

Recording your 'secret' meetings,

She wasn't a maid,

Marcus,

She was a plant,

A Trojan horse that you let walk right through your front door,"

The room erupted in gasps,

The guests looked at Chloe with a mixture of shock and newfound respect,

The quiet,

Unassuming maid had been the architect of the bride's downfall,

"Get them into the conference room,"

Julian ordered his security,

"I want their phones,

I want their devices,

I want everything they have on them,

And then I want to call the authorities,

But not the ones you’ve already bought,

I’m calling the federal agents,

And I’m going to make sure that when they arrive,

They have a full plate of evidence waiting for them,"

Elena,

Who was being restrained in the corner,

Stopped struggling,

She looked at Julian with wide,

Desperate eyes,

"Julian,

Please,

We can talk about this,

We can fix this,

I did it for us,

To secure our future!"

Julian didn't even look at her,

He turned his back on the woman he had intended to spend his life with,

The woman who had tried to end his life,

"We don't have an 'us',

Elena,"

He said,

His voice devoid of emotion,

"There is no us,

There is only the truth,

And the truth is that you’re going to jail for a very,

Very long time."

He walked over to the buffet table,

Picked up a glass of water,

And took a sip,

It was clean,

It was refreshing,

It was a taste of the life he had fought to keep,

He turned back to the room,

His eyes scanning the crowd once more,

"The wedding is cancelled,

But the rest of you,"

He paused,

Letting the tension build,

"You are all witnesses to a crime,

And I expect every single one of you to stay exactly where you are until the police arrive,

If anyone tries to leave,

They will be treated as an accomplice."

The ballroom went deathly quiet,

The air was thick with the weight of the moment,

May you like

And Julian knew that the night was far from over,

The real battle had just begun.
