Chapter 2 - The House of Cards

Inside the executive suite on the thirty-fifth floor, Daniel lowered his phone slowly from his ear, a frown creasing his brow.

“What did she say?” Vanessa asked, lounging lazily across the leather sofa with a glass of sparkling water she had poured from the mini-fridge.

“Nothing. She hung up,” Daniel muttered, a faint knot of unease tightening in his stomach. He shook his head, running a hand through his meticulously styled hair. “She’s bluffing. She’s always been dramatic when she doesn't get her way. Threatening divorce lawyers... it’s just her way of trying to regain control.”

“Let her try,” Vanessa scoffed, crossing her legs. “Even if she files, what’s she going to get? A modest settlement? You own the company, Daniel. Your name is on every major asset, every patent, every offshore trust. She’s a former art teacher with zero corporate leverage. Let her lawyer bark all they want; we’ll crush them in discovery.”

Daniel wanted to believe her. He needed to believe her. For the past two years, as Vantage Logistics had ballooned into a multi-million-dollar enterprise securing government logistics contracts, Daniel had grown increasingly intoxicated by his own success. He had begun to view his marriage to Emily not as a partnership forged through the lean years when they had nothing, but as an outdated anchor holding him back from the high-society life he felt he deserved.

Vanessa represented that new life—ambitious, ruthless, and unburdened by sentimentality.

“Still,” Daniel muttered, walking over to his mahogany desk and tapping his tablet. “I should check the corporate accounts, just to make sure she hasn't tried to pull any joint funds out this week. She has signing authority on the secondary household account.”

He tapped his thumb against the biometric sensor to unlock the primary financial portal for Vantage Logistics.

The screen blinked. A red banner flashed across the top of the monitor with blinding intensity.

ACCESS DENIED: ACCOUNT FROZEN BY COURT ORDER.

Daniel froze. He blinked, staring at the screen in disbelief. “What the hell...?”

“What is it?” Vanessa asked, sitting up straight.

“It’s a glitch,” Daniel muttered, his fingers flying across the keyboard as he tried to log into his personal investment portfolio.

ERROR 403: ASSETS FROZEN PENDING LITIGATION.

He tried his secondary corporate account. Frozen. He tried opening the mobile app for their primary residential mortgage and joint savings.

ACCOUNT RESTRAINED BY JUDICIAL MANDATE.

All the color drained entirely from Daniel’s face. The office seemed to spin around him. Every single dollar, every line of credit, every liquid asset, and every corporate operating account tied to his name had been locked down tight as a drum.

“Daniel? You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” Vanessa said, her voice finally losing its cocky edge as she stood up and walked behind his desk. She stared at the flashing red warnings on the screen. “What does this mean?”

“It means...” Daniel whispered, his voice trembling as the horrifying reality of what Emily had just done crashed over him like a tidal wave. “It means she didn't just call a lawyer. She filed an emergency ex-parte asset freeze.”

“That’s impossible!” Vanessa snapped, her face flushing with sudden panic. “You can’t freeze a multi-million-dollar corporation ex-parte without weeks of forensic accounting!”

“Unless...” Daniel’s voice caught in his throat. He remembered the quiet, methodical way Emily had spent the last two months organizing household receipts, auditing tax returns under the guise of ‘tax preparation,’ and quietly requesting corporate ledger summaries whenever she brought him lunch at the office.

She hadn't been acting suspicious. She had been building a forensic case.

Before Vanessa could argue further, the heavy oak doors of the executive suite flew open with a loud, echoing crash.

Two uniformed county sheriff’s deputies marched into the office, flanked by a tall, sharp-suited man carrying a thick leather briefcase. It was Marcus Vance.

“Daniel Carter?” Marcus asked, his voice carrying the calm, lethal authority of a seasoned litigator.

Daniel stood up behind his desk, trembling. “Who the hell let you in here? This is private property—securing a building without clearance is—"

“Mr. Carter, I am Marcus Vance, counsel for your wife, Emily Carter,” Marcus interrupted smoothly, opening his briefcase and pulling out a stack of stamped legal documents. “You have been formally served with a petition for dissolution of marriage, accompanied by an emergency injunction for corporate asset preservation, forensic audit mandate, and a restraining order prohibiting you or your associates from dissipating company funds.”

Marcus tossed the thick packet of papers directly onto the center of Daniel’s mahogany desk.

“Furthermore,” Marcus added, locking eyes with Vanessa, who was shrinking back toward the sofa, “Miss Vanessa Brooks is hereby named as a co-respondent in a civil tort action for battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and criminal mischief stemming from the assault on my client in this very building approximately thirty minutes ago.”

Silence descended upon the executive suite—a heavy, suffocating silence broken only by the hum of the air conditioning.

Daniel looked from the legal papers on his desk to the stern faces of the deputies standing by the door. The invincible CEO, the master of logistics, the man who thought no one could ever touch him, realized with sickening clarity that his entire world had just been dismantled in less than five minutes.
