Chapter 2 - The Whispers Beneath the Floorboards

That single spark of sensation changed the architecture of Dante’s existence. For forty-eight hours, he said nothing to anyone. He maintained the mask of the broken, paralyzed lord, attending board meetings via video link, listening to Marcus and Viktor outline real estate acquisitions, and watching their subtle body language for cracks in their facade.
Yet, his mind was racing with tactical precision. If his spinal cord wasn't severed, why had his legs failed? Why had the paralysis set in so suddenly following the warehouse explosion? And most importantly, who stood to gain the most from keeping him trapped in this wheelchair?
The answer pointed directly to the daily routine managed by his inner circle.
Every morning at precisely eight o'clock, Viktor Cole personally delivered a silver tray containing Dante’s morning coffee and a specialized regimen of pharmaceutical capsules prescribed by Dr. Aris Thorne, the Rinaldi family's exclusive physician. Dante had swallowed those blue and white capsules every day for three years without a second thought. They were supposed to regulate his blood pressure and manage nerve spasms.
That evening, while the estate was quiet and Elena was cleaning the west wing, Dante put his plan into motion. He couldn't walk yet, but his upper body strength was still that of a seasoned cage fighter. Using a heavy leather belt looped around a ceiling support beam in his private gymnasium, he managed to hoist himself out of his wheelchair and drag his lower body across the floor toward the medicine cabinet in his private en-suite bathroom.
He needed a sample of the daily capsules. But more than that, he needed someone who didn't exist on the syndicate’s payroll to analyze them.
When Lily returned to his study the next afternoon with her cleaning bucket, Dante was waiting. He didn't look at his laptop or his financial reports. He rolled his chair closer to her, lowering his voice until it was a guarded whisper.
"Lily," he said, holding out a small, foil-wrapped packet no larger than a postage stamp. "Do you know what this is?"
The girl tilted her head, her bright eyes narrowing. "It's medicine. Mr. Viktor brings it to you every day."
"It's not medicine," Dante corrected, his expression grim. "It' poison. Or at least, something designed to keep me asleep." He looked around the empty room, ensuring the smart-home audio sensors were muted. "I need you to do something very important for me. Can you keep a secret?"
Lily nodded without a moment of hesitation. "Secrets are safe with me."
"Take this packet," Dante instructed, sliding it secretly into her apron pocket. "When you leave the estate with your mother today, I want you to take it to the old apothecary shop on 4th Street—the one run by Mr. Henderson, the old man with the white beard. Tell him it's a sample from Dante Rinaldi, and ask him to run a gas chromatography test on the active binding agents. Tell him to look for tetrodotoxin derivatives."

Lily memorized the instructions with the startling clarity only children possess. She patted her pocket. "I'll do it, Mr. Rinaldi. And when you walk again, we'll dance."
A rare, fleeting smile touched Dante’s scarred lips. "When I walk again, little one, we'll do whatever you want."
