They Thought I Was Broken / Chapter 4 / 20 4

Part 5

The Sunday morning sun rose over the city,

its bright rays doing little to warm the cold,

sharp air.

Inside a high-rise office building downtown,

Clara sat across from Evelyn Vance,

the city's most formidable corporate defense attorney.

Evelyn was a woman in her late fifties,

with sharp,

silver hair and eyes that could pierce through any corporate lie.

She reviewed the thick stack of financial documents before her,

her pen making neat,

precise marks on the margins.

"This is thorough,

Clara,"

Evelyn remarked,

setting the pen down and looking over her glasses.

"In my thirty years of practice,

I have rarely seen a fraud case built with such absolute precision."

"Daniel didn't just steal from the company,"

"he practically signed his own confession with these transfers."

Clara sipped her black coffee,

her expression calm and completely detached.

"I wanted to ensure there was no room for negotiation,"

she explained,

her voice smooth and steady.

"No plea deals,

no reduced sentences,

and no way for him to spin this to the media."

"He targeted my life's work,"

"and he tried to exploit the loss of my child."

"I want him to face the absolute maximum penalty under the law."

Evelyn nodded slowly,

a look of deep professional respect in her eyes.

"The wire fraud charges alone carry up to twenty years,"

she noted,

tapping the papers.

"Combined with the grand larceny and identity theft from using your digital signature,"

"he is looking at a lifetime behind bars."

"What about your family?"

"Your father’s signature is on several of these authorization requests."

Clara’s gaze drifted to the window,

watching the city traffic move below like tiny ants.

"My father made his choice when he accepted Daniel's bribes,"

she said,

her voice devoid of any familial warmth.

"He wanted a quick payout because his own bad investments ruined his personal capital."

"He thought he could use my company as his personal piggy bank."

"I will not shield him from the legal ramifications of his greed."

"If he has to stand trial alongside Daniel,"

"then so be it."

Evelyn leaned forward,

her expression turning serious.

"It will be messy,

Clara."

"The media will have a field day with a family of this stature tearing itself apart."

"The headlines will be brutal."

"Let them write whatever they want,"

Clara replied,

her eyes turning back to the attorney with an icy glare.

"The public will see that Whitmore Enterprises is strong,

uncompromising,

and entirely under my control."

"A company is only as weak as its leadership,"

"and tomorrow,

I will show everyone that I am more than capable of cutting out the rot."

"The board members are already falling into line,"

Marcus added,

stepping into the room with a fresh folder.

"I spoke with three of the largest institutional investors this morning."

"Once I leaked a hint of the financial recovery plan we have in place,"

"they pledged their full support to Clara."

"They are ready to vote Daniel out the moment the meeting is called to order."

"Good,"

Clara said,

standing up and smoothing the wrinkles from her tailored trousers.

"Evelyn,

have the formal complaints filed with the district attorney by 8:00 AM tomorrow."

"I want the warrants signed before Daniel even steps foot into the building."

"Consider it done,"

the lawyer replied,

standing to shake Clara’s hand.

"He won't know what hit him until the handcuffs are on his wrists."

Clara walked out of the office,

Marcus following close behind her.

As they entered the elevator,

she looked at her reflection in the polished metal doors.

The woman who had wept in the hospital room months ago was gone.

May you like

In her place stood a titan,

ready to reclaim her throne and banish her betrayers into total obscurity.
