Chapter 4 - The Ultimatum in the Dark

-4-

The silence that descended upon the grand parlor was absolute, heavy, and suffocating. The rustle of the wind outside against the glass walls of the pavilion sounded like distant applause for a tragedy unfolding in real time.

Chloe snatched the top document off the coffee table, her manicured fingers trembling violently as her eyes scanned the legal paragraphs. Her face went from flushed anger to stark, chalky white.

"Julian..." she whispered, her voice cracking with sheer disbelief. "It's true. The lease... the catering deposits... the floral guarantees... it's all in his name. You lied to me. You told me your trust fund released the funds last week!"

"Chloe, babe, wait, let me explain—" Julian stammered, stepping toward her with his hands raised in a placating gesture, his confident facade completely disintegrating into panicked desperation. "We were going to pay him back! Once my uncle signs the partnership papers on Monday, we would have wired him every cent with interest! He's just being dramatic!"

"Your uncle isn't signing anything on Monday, Julian," I said, my voice cutting through his frantic excuses like a scalpel. "Because Director Vance at my firm happens to sit on the advisory board of your prospective employer. And I can assure you, embezzling financial credibility to fund a fake wedding is an immediate disqualifier for any executive partnership."

Dad stepped forward, pointing a shaking, accusatory finger directly into my face, his eyes bulging with blind rage. "You arrogant, ungrateful bastard! You would ruin your own brother's life out of sheer spite? After everything this family has given you?"

I stared at my father, feeling a profound, liberating sense of absolute detachment. The last tether tying me to the illusion of filial loyalty snapped right then and there.

"Given me?" I asked softly. "Dad, name one thing. Name one single time in my entire life you supported me without expecting a return on investment. You didn't pay for my college. You didn't help me buy my first car. You didn't even show up to my corporate promotion dinner two years ago because Julian had a mild stomach ache and needed company at a restaurant."

Mom covered her mouth with her hands, tears welling in her eyes, though whether they were tears of genuine remorse or theatrical manipulation was impossible to tell. "Julian... how can you talk to your father that way? We raised you! We fed you!"

"You raised a utility worker," I replied coldly. "A financial instrument you could cash out whenever Julian needed another toy. Well, the account is closed."

I turned my back on them, walking toward the grand double doors of the parlor.

"Wait!" Julian shouted, his voice cracking with sheer panic as he lunged forward, catching me by the shoulder of my coat. "Wait! Don't do this! Please! What do you want? Do you want an apology? Do you want me to put you back on the guest list? Name your price! Just... just don't cancel the venue. If this wedding falls apart, my life is completely over!"

I stopped, slowly turning my head to look back at my younger brother—the golden boy reduced to begging on a parquet floor. I reached up, gently lifting his hand off my coat shoulder and brushing down the fabric as if removing a speck of dirt.

"You called me a loser in the group chat, Julian," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "You and Dad thought it was funny. You thought my name was only good for a check."

I stepped out onto the threshold of the double doors, looking back one last time at the glittering, fragile illusion they had built.

"Enjoy your night," I whispered. "Because tomorrow at ten o'clock sharp, the contract defaults. And I won't be paying a single dime more."

I walked out into the cool night air, leaving them trapped in their own crumbling fortress of lies. As I got back into my car and started the engine, my phone buzzed in the cup holder. It was an email notification from the legal department at Cedar Grove Estate: Notice of Default and Pending Repossession of Services.
