Part 3

The phone call came at 6:45 AM.
I was already awake, sitting on the side of Grace’s bed, watching her chest rise and fall in steady, peaceful rhythms. Her backup glasses were on the nightstand, resting on a clean coaster.
My phone vibrated against my thigh.
Lauren.
I walked down the hallway into the kitchen before answering. I pressed the phone to my ear but did not speak. I wanted her to break the silence first.
"Erin?" Her voice lacked its usual smooth cadence. There was a sharp edge of panic, thinly veiled by irritation. "What is going on with my cards?"
"Good morning, Lauren," I said, my voice low and level.
"Don't 'good morning' me. I just tried to pay for Lucas’s hockey camp fees and my card was declined. Then I checked the main checking account and the automatic transfer from the trust didn't clear. I called the bank and they said the account is locked by the trustee. Fix it right now. It's embarrassing."
"The account isn't locked by mistake, Lauren," I said, pouring myself a glass of water. "I froze it."
A heavy pause on the other end of the line. I could hear her sharp intake of breath.
"You did what? On whose authority?"
"Mine," I said. "As the sole trustee."
"Are you insane?" Lauren’s voice rose, losing its carefully practiced composure. "You can't do that! That money belongs to the family. My kids have school fees due next week. We have the mortgage on the vacation home. You have no right to touch my finances over a stupid domestic disagreement!"
"It wasn't a disagreement," I replied, my tone icy enough to freeze water. "You assaulted my visually impaired daughter. You destroyed her medical equipment. You subjected her to forced labor until her hands bled. That is not a disagreement, Lauren. That is a felony."
"She was being a brat!" Lauren screamed into the receiver. "She was snooping through my private things! Mom and Dad agreed she needed discipline. You are ruining her, Erin, raising her to think she’s special just because she wears thick glasses. I did you a favor!"
"You have until 9:00 AM to enjoy your current lifestyle," I said, ignoring her outburst completely. "At 9:00 AM, Mr. Harrison will formally serve you with the suspension notice. Your monthly allowance is gone. The tuition payments for Lucas, Chloe, and Madison will be canceled at the end of this semester. The lease on your luxury SUV, which is registered under the trust’s holding company, will be revoked by the end of the week."
"You can't do this to me!" Lauren sounded desperate now, her voice cracking. "Mom and Dad won't let you!"
"Mom and Dad don't own the keys, Lauren. Grandmother knew exactly who you were. That’s why she left me in charge."
"I'll sue you!"
"Please do," I said softly. "To sue me, you'll have to explain to a judge why your access to a multimillion-dollar trust fund was revoked. You'll have to look at the photos of Grace's hands. You'll have to explain why you stepped on a seven-year-old's glasses. Discovery is a public process, Lauren. Do you think your husband’s business partners would love to read that transcript?"
She went completely silent.
"Do not call my phone again," I said. "All future communication will go through Mr. Harrison."

I hung up before she could reply.
My hands were perfectly steady. The calm of the hospital was still with me, but beneath it, a deep, ancient anger was beginning to burn. This was only the first step.
