Chapter 3 - The Shadow Partner

If Patricia hadn't transferred the final $30,000, then someone else had access to the fraudulently created 'Evelyn Whitmore Care Fund.'

Richard Vance stepped forward, pulling up a digital trace on his tablet. "The transfer three weeks ago was authorized using a secondary digital key. The IP address originates from a residential property in downtown Denver."

My cousin Emily, who had been standing quietly near the doorway in tears, suddenly gasped. She pulled out her phone, her fingers flying across the screen. "That’s... that’s Julian’s apartment building."

Julian was Patricia’s eldest son—my cousin who had mysteriously moved into a luxury high-rise apartment downtown six months ago, claiming he had landed a high-paying consulting job in tech.

"Julian?" Uncle Robert muttered, looking utterly broken. "Julian doesn't work in tech?"

"He never had a tech job," Emily confessed, fresh tears falling down her cheeks. "Mom gave him money to start his own lifestyle brand, but he lost it all gambling online. He’s been blackmailing Mom for months, threatening to tell Grandma about the $180,000 if she didn't keep feeding his accounts!"

The tangled web of deceit was sickening. Patricia had stolen from me to save her home, and her own son had turned around to blackmail her, draining the remaining funds to fuel his addictions.

Grandma Margaret stood tall, looking at the broken family around her. She looked at Patricia, who was sobbing hysterically on the floor; at Robert, who sat frozen in shock; and at my mother, who couldn't bring herself to look me in the eye.

"This family is rotten at its foundation," Grandma declared softly. "You built a kingdom of luxury on the suffering of my grand-daughter and great-granddaughter."

She walked over to me, placing a warm, gentle hand on my shoulder. The fierce anger in her eyes softened instantly into pure, maternal warmth.

"Evelyn, my darling," Grandma said softly. "You are coming home with me tonight. Right now."

"Grandma, I..." I looked down at my worn jeans and damp sneakers. "I don't have anything packed. My apartment in the city..."

"We will buy whatever you and Lily need," Grandma insisted, her voice firm and undisputed. "You will never set foot in that cold apartment again. Richard, call a private chauffeur. Secure Evelyn’s belongings tomorrow morning, and ensure her lease is terminated and paid in full."

"Wait!" Patricia cried out, scrambling to her feet. "Margaret, what are you going to do about us? Are you going to call the police?"

Grandma turned back at the doorway, holding my arm gently as Richard carried Lily's modest diaper bag.

"I am giving you twenty-four hours, Patricia," Grandma said with lethal authority. "Twenty-four hours to sign over your shares of the family estate to Evelyn as restitution. If you refuse, or if you try to hide a single cent, Richard will hand every piece of evidence over to the federal prosecutor on Monday morning."
