Chapter 5 - The Ledger of the Dead

The tunnel beneath the city was cool and echoed with the distant, rhythmic drip of water. Allesandro led Clara and Lily through the dark corridor, his tactical flashlight cutting a sharp beam through the damp fog. Behind them, the iron doors of the sub-basement finally buckled under the weight of Victor Donati’s explosives.
"Marco," Allesandro said into his earpiece, the signal weak beneath forty feet of earth and stone. "Status."
"We're at the river exit, Boss," Marco’s voice cracked through static. "We brought two armored sedans. The city police are finally responding—someone dialed in a structural fire at the estate."
"Keep the engines running," Allesandro commanded. "We’ll be at the drainage outlet in five minutes."
As they reached a junction where the old brickwork gave way to modern concrete culverts, a flashlight beam suddenly whipped across Allesandro's face from the shadows ahead.
"Hold it right there, Don Moretti!" a voice barked.
Allesandro instantly raised his firearm, shifting his body to cover Clara and Lily. Standing at the outlet of the tunnel were three men in dark raincoats—not Donati mercenaries, but federal agents bearing badges pinned to their lapels.
The lead man stepped forward, his eyes cold and gray under the dim light. "I’m Agent Vance, Organized Crime Task Force. Put the weapon down, Allesandro. It's over."
Allesandro didn't lower his gun. "You're off your turf, Vance. This is private property."
"It was private property until ten minutes ago, when your house turned into a war zone," Vance replied, taking a step closer, his own weapon drawn. "We've been tracking Victor Donati for six months. We knew he was moving on your estate tonight."
"You knew?" Clara gasped from behind Allesandro. "You let them attack us?"
Agent Vance shifted his glance to Clara, his expression unreadable. "Mrs. Bennett... or should I say, Mrs. Donati. Your husband was our informant. He was supposed to hand over the Donati family registry to us three years ago before he was executed."
"He wasn't an informant!" Clara cried, her voice cracking with indignation. "He was trying to protect his daughter! He didn't trust you, and he didn't trust his family!"
"It doesn't matter what he was," Vance said coldly. "The ledger on that quilt contains the key to five hundred million dollars in illicit assets, three sitting state senators, and every supply line from here to Rotterdam. It is government property now. Hand it over, Moretti, and walk away. You're clean on this one—we let Donati take the fall for the raid, and you keep your remaining turf."
Allesandro looked at Vance, then back at Lily, who was holding tightly to her mother's skirt. The cold calculus of his world was simple: hand over the blanket, sacrifice the child's leverage, and preserve his own empire. That was how men like him survived for decades.
He looked down at the small girl. She looked back up at him, her tiny fingers clutching the worn hem of her nightgown.
"Mr. Moretti?" she whispered. "Is Daisy okay?"
Allesandro felt a sudden, profound disgust for the room, the money, the empire, and the grey-eyed agent standing before him.
"The blanket isn't yours, Vance," Allesandro said softly.
Vance's finger tightened on his trigger. "Don't be a fool, Moretti. You're outnumbered. You have no jurisdiction here."
Before Vance could raise his weapon, a heavy wooden crate behind the agents exploded into splinters as Marco and three Moretti enforcers stepped out from an adjacent access shaft, their automatic rifles aimed directly at the federal agents' backs.
"He doesn't need jurisdiction," Marco growled, his scar-twisted face illuminated by the red laser sights of his weapon. "He has us."
Vance froze, his breath catching in his throat as he realized he was caught in an absolute crossfire.
"Drop your weapons," Allesandro ordered, his voice dropping into the low, iron cadence of a man who held total control. "All of them."
Slowly, reluctantly, the three federal agents unclipped their sidearms and let them fall into the mud at their feet.
May you like
"You're making a war with the federal government, Moretti," Vance spat, his teeth clenched.
"No," Allesandro said, taking the blanket from his coat and handing it carefully to Clara. "I'm retiring from the business. And I'm taking my family with me."
