Chapter 9 - The New Member of the House

That evening, as the Mediterranean sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of deep purple, rose, and burnished gold, a horn honked gently from the gravel driveway behind the villa.

Allesandro walked around the side of the house as a blue delivery van pulled to a stop. A local craftsman from the nearby town of Tavira stepped out, holding a large, carefully wrapped cardboard box.

"Good evening, Senhor Alex," the craftsman said in warm, accented English. "It took some time to find the correct porcelain, but we finished the restoration as you requested."

Allesandro accepted the heavy box with a nod of deep gratitude. "Thank you, Mateo. Have a good evening."

"God bless your family, Senhor," the craftsman said, waving as he drove back down the winding coastal road.

Allesandro carried the box into the spacious, open-air living room, where a warm fire was crackling in the stone fireplace. Clara was sitting on the sofa, reading a book, while Lily sat on the plush rug, playing with a set of wooden building blocks.

"What's that?" Clara asked, looking up from her book.

Allesandro set the box down on the low oak coffee table and sat down on his knees beside Lily. "Lily," he said gently. "Come here for a second."

The little girl set her blocks down and scrambled over, her large brown eyes full of curiosity.

Allesandro carefully folded back the cardboard flaps and removed several layers of soft tissue paper. From the box, he lifted out a doll.

It was Daisy.

The worn blue dress had been recreated from fine Portuguese cotton, stitched with loving precision. The cotton stuffing was brand-new, clean, and soft. But most importantly, the eyes—once filled with cold, surveillance glass—were now two beautifully crafted, hand-painted porcelain spheres of pure, soft blue.

There were no wires. No micro-lenses. No blinking red lights in the dark.

Lily gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "Daisy?" she whispered softly.

"She was broken," Allesandro said quietly, holding the doll out to the child. "So I sent her to a very special doctor in the village. She doesn't have to watch anything anymore, Lily. She’s just a toy now. And she’s yours."

Lily took the doll into her arms, pulling it tight against her chest and burying her face in its soft wool hair. She rocked back and forth on the rug, a huge, radiant smile lighting up her entire face.

"She's soft," Lily whispered, looking up at Allesandro with tears of pure joy in her eyes. "She doesn't make the click sound anymore."

May you like

"No more clicking," Allesandro promised softly, reaching out to gently pat the child's head. "Never again."

Clara watched from the sofa, her eyes brimming with tears. She wiped them away with the back of her hand, a soft, beautiful laugh escaping her lips as she watched her daughter curl up on the rug, holding the restored doll close as she drifted off to sleep by the warmth of the fire.
