Chapter 10: The True Inheritance

Chapter 10: The True Inheritance

Six months later, the bright California sun felt different. It no longer looked like an alibi; it simply felt warm.

In the backyard of the coastal cottage, the sound of crashing waves was completely drowned out by a much better sound: Emma's laughter. She was running through a sprinkler on the green grass, her small feet kicking up droplets of water that sparkled like diamonds in the air. She was no longer afraid of the water. She had reclaimed it.

Yvette stood on the porch, holding a tray of freshly squeezed lemonade, a genuine smile on her face. She had left the grand mansion behind without a single regret, choosing instead to be the grandmotherly figure Emma actually deserved.

Christopher watched his daughter from a wooden bench.

Emma ran up to him, soaking wet and grinning from ear to ear, slamming her small hands onto his knees. "Daddy, look! I caught a bubble!"

Christopher laughed, lifting her up into his arms, completely unbothered by the water ruining his shirt. He looked at her bright, innocent eyes and realized that survival was only the first step. The real victory was here, in the quiet spaces where money couldn't buy power, and where love was the only legacy left standing.
