PART 4 — THE RECORDING

PART 4 — THE RECORDING

The old hunting cabin sat at the far edge of the Pierce property, half-hidden by overgrown trees and years of neglect. It had once been a place where Christopher’s father took important guests to drink and talk business away from prying ears. Now it was mostly forgotten—except by those who needed somewhere private to plan dark things.

Juliette arrived just after dusk, dressed in dark jeans and a hooded jacket. She carried a small bag and moved with the careful steps of someone who knew they were being watched. She unlocked the cabin door and slipped inside.

Inside, the air smelled of dust and old wood. She set the bag on the table and pulled out a small vial and a syringe. Her hands shook slightly as she prepared the sedative. It was strong enough to make a child sleep deeply—deep enough that if she were left in the cold cabin overnight, the morning might bring a tragic accident.

Juliette told herself she wasn’t a monster. She was simply protecting what was hers. Christopher had never loved her. The marriage had been a business arrangement from the start. The Pierce fortune was supposed to be her reward for years of playing the perfect wife. She would not let a six-year-old bastard take it from her.

She was so focused on the syringe that she didn’t hear the floorboard creak behind her.

“Planning another accident?”

Juliette spun around. Christopher stood in the doorway, his tall frame filling the space. Behind him were two police officers and Marcus, the head of security. Their flashlights cut through the darkness.

Juliette’s face went white. She dropped the syringe. “Chris… this isn’t what it looks like. I was just—”

“Save it,” Christopher said coldly. “We heard everything. Yvette recorded your conversation with my mother from the hallway. The police have a warrant for your arrest. And this time, there won’t be any bail.”

One of the officers stepped forward and read Juliette her rights while the other cuffed her. Juliette began to cry—real tears this time, born of panic rather than performance.

“You can’t do this! Estelle will ruin you! She has connections everywhere!”

Christopher looked at her with something close to pity. “Estelle is already being questioned. She made the mistake of using a phone that was still tapped from an old investigation. It seems my father had his own secrets.”

Juliette was led away, still screaming threats. Christopher stayed behind for a moment, staring at the cabin that had almost become the site of his daughter’s death. He felt sick.

When he returned to the mansion, Emma was waiting in the main hall with Yvette. The little girl ran to him the moment she saw him.

“Daddy! You’re back!”

He scooped her up and held her close. “I’m back, baby. And I have something important to tell you.”

He carried her into the living room where the fire was lit. He sat with her on his lap and looked into her eyes.

“Juliette is gone. She can never come near you again. The police took her away. Grandma… Grandma is also in trouble. She tried to hurt you too. But you’re safe now. I promise.”

Emma was quiet for a long time. Then she asked, “Does that mean we can be a real family? Just you and me?”

Christopher smiled through the ache in his chest. “Yes. Just you and me. And Yvette, if she’ll stay. And anyone else who loves you the way you deserve to be loved.”

Emma rested her head against his shoulder. “I think Mommy would be happy now.”

“I think so too,” Christopher whispered.

That night, for the first time since the pool incident, Emma slept without nightmares. Christopher stayed beside her bed until dawn, watching over her.

Downstairs, the lawyers worked through the night finalizing the new will and the official acknowledgment of paternity. By morning, the entire world would know that Emma Pierce was Christopher’s daughter and rightful heir.

But Christopher no longer cared about the fortune.

He only cared about the small girl sleeping peacefully in the room above him.

She was his real inheritance.

And he would protect her with everything he had.
