Chapter 5 - The Gala of Wolves

Downstairs in the Grand Ballroom, the atmosphere was thick with jazz music, expensive champagne, and the loud, self-important chatter of Chicago’s corporate elite.

The Vance Hospitality Regional Gala was in full swing. Over two hundred hotel managers, regional vice presidents, board members, and high-net-worth investors were gathered under the massive crystal chandeliers, eagerly waiting for the arrival of the mysterious chairman who had spent three years living as a recluse following his wife's tragic death.

Standing near the center of the room, sipping a glass of vintage scotch, was Julian Drake.

Julian was the Vice President of Regional Operations—a sharp, ambitious man in a tailored three-piece suit with slicked-back hair and a smile that never quite reached his eyes. For three years, while Ethan mourned his wife in quiet isolation, Julian had been systematically consolidating power across the company's Midwest properties. He had filled managerial positions with his own loyalists, cut employee benefits to inflate quarterly profits, and pocketed massive performance bonuses.

Beside Julian stood Richard Sterling, the former General Manager, looking disheveled, pale, and thoroughly panicked.

"Julian, you have to help me!" Sterling hissed under his breath, hiding behind a marble pillar away from the crowd. "He fired me! Right there in the lobby!"

Julian took a slow sip of his scotch, entirely unbothered. "You let him catch you off guard, Richard. That was sloppy."

"He was dressed like a beggar!" Sterling whined. "How was I supposed to know Ethan Vance would show up unannounced on a Tuesday night carrying a sleeping kid?!"

"Ethan has always been sentimental and pathetic," Julian scoffed, a sneer twisting his lips. "Since Sarah died, he’s lost his edge. He thinks running a multi-billion-dollar hospitality empire is about 'human connection' and 'making people feel welcome.' It’s about numbers, Richard. It’s about margins."

"He’s going to audit my books, Julian!" Sterling panicked, gripping Julian’s arm. "If he audits my property, he’s going to find the shell company we used to siphon off the renovation budget!"

Julian violently yanked his arm free, glaring at Sterling with murderous intensity. "Keep your mouth shut! If you mention that budget to anyone, I will ensure you never work in this industry again—or anywhere else."

"Then fix this!" Sterling begged. "The board meeting is tomorrow morning! If Ethan takes the stage tonight and announces my termination, the whole house of cards collapses!"

Julian straightened his silver tie, a cold, calculating look taking over his features. "Relax. Ethan hasn't spoken publicly in three years. He’s emotionally fragile. He brought his daughter here on the anniversary of his wife's death—he’s vulnerable. I will handle Ethan Vance tonight."

At that exact moment, the heavy mahogany doors of the Grand Ballroom swung open.

The room fell completely silent.

Ethan Vance walked into the ballroom.

He was no longer wearing the faded leather jacket or the scuffed boots. He wore a flawless, bespoke charcoal suit, a dark tie, and his hair was neat. His posture was imposing, his presence commanding the immediate attention of every executive in the room.

Beside him walked Lupita, wearing an elegant, simple navy blue dress provided by the hotel's concierge team, her head held high.

And in Ethan’s arms, wearing a small white dress with her stuffed rabbit tucked under her arm, was little Lily, resting her head comfortably against her father’s shoulder.

Julian Drake smirked, setting his scotch glass down on a passing waiter's tray.

"Watch and learn, Richard," Julian whispered. "I’m going to end his career tonight."
