Chapter 10 - The New Dawn

Six months later.

The front lobby of the Grand Regent Hotel in Chicago was bustling with life, warmth, and laughter.

The cold, sterile atmosphere of the past had completely vanished. The marble desk was now adorned with fresh yellow sunflowers, soft jazz music played gently through the lobby, and the front-desk staff greeted every single guest with genuine, radiant smiles.

Standing near the main entrance was a newly installed bronze plaque, polished to a mirror shine. It read:

THE SARAH VANCE MEMORIAL LOBBY "In this house, every traveler is family, and no one is ever turned away."

Lupita Alvarez stood near the concierge desk, dressed in a sharp, elegant navy blazer, holding a tablet as she warmly greeted an elderly couple arriving from the airport, offering them warm tea and personally directing the bellhop to assist with their bags.

The front doors slid open.

Ethan Vance walked into the lobby. He wore a comfortable blue sweater, jeans, and a smile that reached all the way to his warm eyes.

Beside him walked Lily, now seven years old, proudly carrying a small canvas backpack decorated with colorful cartoon patches.

"Good afternoon, Mr. Vance! Hi, Lily!" the front-desk agents called out cheerfully.

"Hi, Patricia! Hi, Marco!" Lily waved happily, running over to the desk where a freshly updated Patricia—who had been given a second chance by Ethan after demonstrating genuine remorse and undergoing intensive hospitality retraining—smiled warmly and handed Lily a small wooden toy train.

"Thank you!" Lily giggled, running over to Lupita and wrapping her arms around her waist. "Auntie Lupita!"

"Hello, my sweet princess!" Lupita laughed, kneeling down and hugging the little girl tightly. "Look at you! You’ve grown two inches since last month!"

Ethan walked over, resting a hand warmly on Lupita’s shoulder. "How are the foundation applications looking for this quarter?"

"Wonderful, Ethan," Lupita beamed, her eyes shining with pride. "We just approved forty-two educational scholarships for our housekeeping staff's children across the state. My grandson Mateo just received his acceptance letter to the pharmacy program at the state university."

Ethan’s heart swelled with genuine joy. "That is incredible news, Lupita. I am so proud of him."

They walked together toward the hotel’s inner courtyard garden—a newly built outdoor sanctuary filled with blooming red roses, green ivy, and comfortable wooden benches where guests could sit and rest under the sun.

In the center of the garden stood a beautiful stone fountain, its clear water sparkling beneath the bright afternoon sky.

Lily ran over to the fountain, pulling a shining copper penny from her pocket.

"Make a wish, Lily!" Ethan called out softly, standing beside Lupita on the paved stone path.

Lily closed her eyes tightly, held the coin against her chest, and tossed it into the clear, rippling water.

SPLASH.

She turned around, running back to her father with a wide, radiant smile, wrapping her small hands around his fingers.

Ethan looked down at his daughter, then looked up at the sky—clear, vast, and endless.

The grief was not gone—it would always be a part of who he was. But it no longer weighed him down like a chain. It had transformed into a beacon, guiding him to protect others, to build a world where kindness was restored, and to give his daughter a life filled with light, hope, and unconditional love.

Ethan knelt down, lifting Lily into his arms, holding her close against his chest as they walked together through the rose garden into the warm, golden afternoon.

The dark night was over.

The new day had finally arrived.
