Isabella’s perfectly manicured fingers tightened around her delicate cup.

“He is your blood,” Isabella whispered, her voice shaking with forced, theatrical emotion. “He was your family.”

Valeria’s breathing remained entirely natural. Deep and even.

“He was my warden,” Valeria corrected softly.

“You knew, Isabella.”

Isabella froze.

“You saw the bruises at the summer gala. You saw me flinch when he raised his hand.”

Isabella’s eyes darted away. The subtle, undeniable guilt of the complicit.

“You chose the luxury of his money over the reality of my survival.”
