CHAPTER 8: THE PRICE OF LIGHT
CHAPTER 8: THE PRICE OF LIGHT
Falling in love on the rooftop was easy, but walking back down into the reality of Oakridge High was a different story. The announcement of The Lucas Miller Adaptive Sports and Rehabilitation Wing brought massive media attention to the school. Suddenly, Maya wasn’t just a student; she was the face of a national movement.
Every morning, local news vans parked outside the school gates. Reporters tried to shout questions at Maya as she walked to class, her hand tightly clasped in Ethan’s.
"Maya, how does it feel to replace your bully with a legacy?" "Ethan, is it true your family is cutting ties with the Howell corporation completely?"
The pressure was suffocating. One afternoon, while hiding out in the journalism room, Maya found Ethan staring blankly at a legal document on his phone. His usual golden-boy confidence was entirely gone.
"What is it?" Maya asked, placing a hand on his shoulder.
Ethan let out a rough, dry laugh. "Vanessa’s father isn't going down without a fight. Since my dad refused to drop the harassment charges against Vanessa, Mr. Howell pulled all his investments. My dad’s firm is on the verge of bankruptcy, Maya. My parents are fighting every night. My mom told me yesterday that we might have to sell the house."
Maya’s heart dropped. The guilt hit her like a physical blow. "Ethan... this is because of me. If I hadn't come to this school, if I hadn't brought those photos—"
"Hey, stop," Ethan cut her off, spinning his chair around and grabbing both of her hands. His eyes were fierce but tired. "Don't you dare blame yourself. Vanessa made her choice. My dad made his. We are standing up for Lucas, and we are standing up for you. I don't care about the house. I care about us."
But Maya could see the strain in the dark circles under his eyes. At basketball practice, Ethan was losing his focus. He missed shots he used to make in his sleep, and his temper was fraying. The school that had once worshipped him was now watching his family’s financial downfall like a reality TV show.
To make matters more complicated, a new shadow entered the arena. A wealthy, charismatic senior named Julian Vance—the principal’s nephew and a brilliant student council leader—was appointed as the student liaison for the construction of the new wing.
Julian was smooth, sophisticated, and incredibly attentive to Maya. He spent hours with her reviewing blueprints, treating her not with the protective caution that Ethan did, but as an intellectual equal.

"You have a brilliant mind, Maya," Julian said one evening as they worked late in the library, his smile warm and lingering a bit too long. "Ethan is great, but he looks at you like he’s trying to save you. I look at you and see someone who can run the world."
From the library doorway, Ethan watched them, his fists clenched in his pockets, the weight of his collapsing world crushing him from the inside out.
