CHAPTER 9: BOUNDARIES AND BURDEN
CHAPTER 9: BOUNDARIES AND BURDEN
By winter, the tension at Oakridge High reached a boiling point. The construction of the Lucas Miller wing had officially begun, the sound of drilling echoing across the courtyard like a constant heartbeat.
Ethan’s home life had become a disaster zone. His father was constantly away dealing with lawyers, and the stress was tearing his parents apart. One night, after an intense argument with his dad, Ethan drove to Maya’s small house. When she opened the door, he looked completely broken.
He pulled her into a desperate, heavy kiss—a kiss that felt less like love and more like a drowning man reaching for a lifeline.
"Ethan, talk to me," Maya whispered against his lips, pulling him inside into the warmth of her living room. "What happened?"
"They’re putting the house on the market tomorrow," Ethan said, his voice cracking as he slid down the wall, burying his face in his hands. "Everything Lucas grew up in. Everything we have left of him. It’s gone. And the worst part? Mr. Howell offered my dad a deal today. He’ll reinvest everything and save the firm... if I sign a public statement saying Vanessa’s actions were just a teenage misunderstanding."
Maya froze. Her breath caught in her throat. "He wants you to lie. To clear her name."
"If I don't, my family loses everything," Ethan choked out, looking up at her with red, tortured eyes. "But if I do, I betray you. I betray Lucas. Maya, I don't know what to do anymore. I’m so tired of being strong."
Maya held him as he cried, her heart breaking into a million pieces. She realized that her presence in Ethan’s life, which had brought so much truth, was now costing him his security.
The next day at school, Maya was distracted. During a meeting with Julian to discuss the wing's opening ceremony gala, she broke down, telling him about Ethan's predicament.
Julian listened intently, his fingers tapping thoughtfully against his chin. "The Howells are powerful, Maya. But they aren't the only ones with money. My family has connections. I can talk to some investors, help Ethan's dad bypass the Howells entirely."
Maya’s eyes lit up with hope. "Really? You would do that?"
May you like
"For you? Absolutely," Julian said softly, reaching across the table to cover her hand with his. "But Ethan needs to step back. His anger is making him a liability for the foundation. Let me handle this, Maya. Trust me."
Just as Julian’s hand tightened around hers, the library door swung open. Ethan stood there, his varsity jacket damp from the snow outside. He saw Julian’s hand on Maya’s, and the fragile string holding his composure together snapped completely.
