CHAPTER 8: THE FOUNDATION'S FIRST CASE

Three months after the article broke, the Monroe Empress Foundation received its first major case, and it landed on Elena's desk with a weight that made every boardroom victory before it feel small by comparison. A woman named Sofia Reyes, twenty-six years old, had reached out through the foundation's confidential hotline. She had been engaged to the son of a shipping magnate, a man who had convinced her to sign away her stake in a family restaurant chain "for the good of the relationship," only to have her publicly humiliated and cast aside once the paperwork was finalized.

Elena read the intake file twice before setting it down, her jaw tight. It wasn't identical to her own story, but the architecture of the deception was unmistakably familiar — a woman's trust used as leverage, then discarded once it had served its purpose.

"I want to meet her myself," Elena told the foundation's director. "Not as a donor writing a check from a distance. I want to sit across from her."

When Sofia arrived at Monroe Tower the following week, she looked exactly as Elena remembered feeling in the days after her own wedding collapsed — hollowed out, apologetic for taking up space, flinching slightly whenever a door opened too quickly. Elena poured her tea herself, waving off the assistant who offered to do it, and sat down across from her without a single folder or contract between them.

"I'm not here to tell you what to do next," Elena said gently. "I'm here to tell you that whatever they took from you, it wasn't your worth, and it was never actually about you in the first place. It was about what you represented to someone who needed a shortcut. That's not a reflection of who you are. It's a reflection of who they were."

Sofia's eyes filled with tears, and for the first time since arriving, her shoulders lowered from around her ears. "Everyone keeps telling me to move on," she whispered. "No one's told me it's okay to be angry first."

"Be as angry as you need to be," Elena said. "Then let's get your restaurant chain back, and then some."
