CHAPTER 9: THE RECKONING FOR THE STERLINGS
Victoria Sterling's trial concluded in late autumn, the courtroom packed with reporters who had followed the case since the wedding footage first surfaced online. The prosecution's case was, by every account, devastatingly simple — the same 4K security footage that had ended her engagement now ended her freedom, supplemented by testimony from three catering staff members who confirmed, under oath, that Victoria had bribed them to plant the ring.
Victoria was sentenced to four years for grand theft extortion and criminal defamation, with the judge specifically noting the calculated cruelty of using a public, celebratory event to destroy another woman's reputation. Richard Sterling's investment firm collapsed entirely within the same month, unable to survive the exodus of clients who no longer wanted their names associated with the family.
Elena did not attend the sentencing. She had considered it — some part of her still craved the finality of watching Victoria hear the verdict in person — but in the end, she sent her father's chief counsel instead and spent that particular afternoon at the foundation's new office in Brooklyn, reviewing grant applications from women rebuilding their lives with nothing but a lawyer's letter and their own determination.
