Chapter 3 - The Ambush at Monroe Street

The alarm klaxon in the county welfare building began to wail, a shrill, pulsing shriek that cut through the fluorescent-lit hallways.
“All personnel, code red in the west lobby! Lock down all interior corridors!” an automated voice blared over the intercom system.
Mara’s face drained of color. She reached for her desk phone, but the landline emitted a flat, dead tone—the phone lines had been cleanly severed.
“They’re here,” Adrian said instantly. His tactical instincts, honed during years of protecting shipping lanes and managing syndicate turf wars, kicked in with terrifying speed.
He didn't hesitate. He scooped Lila out of her chair before she could process what was happening, tucking her securely against his chest with one arm while reaching inside his coat with the other to pull out his matte-black Sig Sauer pistol.
Lila let out a startled squeak, burying her face in his shoulder and clutching her gray rabbit. “Mr. Vale? What’s happening?”
“Hold onto your rabbit, Lila. Close your eyes and don't look up,” Adrian instructed in a calm, steady tone that brook no argument.
Mara stared at the gun in Adrian’s hand, her breath catching in her throat. “You... you brought a firearm into a state building? Are you insane?”
“I brought a firearm because I knew my enemies wouldn't wait for a court order,” Adrian snapped, grabbing Mara by the wrist with his free hand. “Move! If you stay in this room, you’re a target.”
Before Mara could protest, the heavy wooden door of Room 404 exploded inward.
Splintered wood and brass screws flew across the linoleum as two massive men in black tactical gear and ski masks forced their way into the office. Both carried suppressed automatic rifles, their black boots crunching on the debris.
They weren't local thugs. They were professional extraction mercenaries—the exact same elite contractors Grant Mercer used for offshore wetwork.
The first mercenary raised his rifle barrel straight toward Adrian’s chest.
Adrian didn't blink. With terrifying, preternatural speed, he shoved Mara behind his frame, raised his Sig Sauer, and fired twice.
Bang! Bang!
The first round caught the mercenary’s tactical vest, spinning him backward against the filing cabinet with a heavy grunt. The second round shattered the overhead light fixture, plunging the back half of the office into deep shadow.
“MOVE!” Adrian roared at Mara.
Mara, shaking with adrenaline and shock, scrambled out from behind the desk and followed Adrian through the splintered doorway into the rear maintenance corridor.
The hallway was filled with swirling dust and the sharp, acrid smell of gunpowder. Sirens wailed outside, but they were drowned out by the heavy thud of running boots approaching from the opposite end of the hall.
“This way!” Mara yelled, her bureaucratic training giving way to pure survival instinct. She grabbed Adrian’s sleeve, pulling him toward a heavy steel fire exit marked Private Maintenance Access.
She punched a numeric code into the electronic keypad beside the door. With a mechanical clack, the heavy door swung open, revealing an exterior alleyway slick with morning rain.
“Where does this lead?” Adrian asked, scanning the alley with his pistol raised.
“To the underground municipal loading dock,” Mara panted, her chest heaving. “There’s an exit onto Wabash Avenue. My car is parked three blocks down.”
“Forget your car,” Adrian said grimly. “Marcus is waiting with an armored vehicle on the corner of 4th and Jackson. If we hit the street, we’re exposed. We need to move fast.”
They sprinted down the concrete ramp into the subterranean loading bay. The air down here was cold, damp, smelling of exhaust fumes and wet concrete.

Just as they reached the halfway point of the loading dock, the screech of tires echoed off the concrete walls.
A dark gray SUV—the exact same model that had dropped Lila off at Adrian’s hotel two days ago—burst through the lower security gate, its high-beam headlights blindingly bright as they swept across the damp pavement, locking directly onto Adrian, Mara, and the little girl in Adrian’s arms.
