Chapter 4 - Bloodlines and Bulletproof Glass

The gray SUV accelerated down the concrete ramp, engine roaring like a caged beast, its front bumper aimed straight at the narrow pedestrian walkway where Adrian stood shielding Lila.
Adrian didn't retreat an inch. He dropped to one knee, keeping Lila pressed tightly against his chest, and raised his pistol.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Three hollow-point rounds slammed directly into the SUV’s armored windshield, spider-webbing the thick glass into a web of white cracks right in front of the driver’s seat.
The driver shrieked, hauling the steering wheel hard to the left to avoid a direct collision. The SUV skidded across the wet concrete, smashing its side panel against a massive concrete support pillar with a deafening screech of bending metal and shattering glass. 💊
Before the dust could settle, the rear doors of the wrecked SUV flew open. Two more armed mercenaries spilled out onto the pavement, raising their rifles.
Rat-tat-tat-tat!
Submachine gun fire chewed into the concrete wall inches above Adrian’s head, sending a shower of gray dust and stone chips raining down over them.
“Get down!” Adrian yelled, pushing Mara behind a heavy industrial dumpster.
He leaned out from cover, squeezing off three precise return shots that caught the lead mercenary in the shoulder, dropping him instantly to the pavement. The second mercenary hesitated, realizing they were outgunned and exposed.
Suddenly, a massive black armored Maybach—Marcus’s vehicle—burst through the loading bay's secondary security barrier, its heavy steel front grill slamming directly into the side of the mercenary’s SUV, pinning it permanently against the concrete pillar.
The passenger door of the Maybach flew open. Marcus leaned out, holding a 12-gauge shotgun.
“Get in, boss!” Marcus barked over the roar of the engine.
Adrian didn't wait. He hoisted Lila into the back seat of the Maybach, shoved Mara in after her, and dived in through the door just as Marcus threw the transmission into reverse and punched the accelerator.
The Maybach roared backward out of the loading bay, tearing through the rain-slicked Chicago streets, leaving behind a scene of absolute devastation.
Inside the armored cabin, the air was thick with the smell of scorched rubber and gunpowder.
Lila was trembling violently, her face buried in the fur of her gray rabbit, tears finally breaking free and tracking down her cheeks.
Mara sat beside her, clutching her own shoulders, staring out the bullet-resistant window at the blurring skyline as the shock of the firefight finally caught up with her. Her breathing was shallow, erratic.
Adrian sat in the middle seat, his chest heaving slightly beneath his coat. He holstered his pistol, turned to Lila, and gently reached out to touch her dark curls.
“You’re safe now, Lila,” Adrian said, his voice softer than Mara had ever heard it sound. “Nobody is going to hurt you.”
Lila sniffled, looking up at him with red, tear-filled eyes. “Are those bad men going to come back?”
“No,” Adrian promised, his eyes hardening into flint. “They’re never coming near you again.”
Mara turned her head slowly, looking at Adrian with an entirely new expression. The hostility and prejudice she had held against the Vale name for eleven years had been burned away by the smoke of a gunfight.
“You knew they were going to be there,” Mara said, her voice shaking slightly with adrenaline. “When we were in the office... you knew an attack was coming.”
“I knew Mercer wouldn't leave loose ends,” Adrian replied, pulling a clean linen handkerchief from his pocket and gently wiping a smudge of soot from Lila’s forehead. “Lila is the legal heiress to Thomas Hart’s estate. Under Illinois corporate law, if an heir is under guardianship when a company is liquidated, the original acquisition can be contested in federal court. Mercer bought Vanguard Logistics with fraudulent signatures. If Lila claims her grandfather’s shares, Mercer loses billions—and his entire shipping syndicate collapses.”
Mara stared at him, stunned. “So this isn't just about a personal vendetta... she’s sitting on the legal key to dismantling Mercer’s entire empire.”
“She isn't sitting on anything except a couch in my penthouse,” Adrian corrected firmly. “She’s a six-year-old child who likes coloring dragons and pouring her own cereal. As of today, she’s under my permanent legal protection.”
Mara opened her mouth to argue—to invoke state protocols, child welfare laws, and jurisdiction—but she stopped. She looked at Lila, who had curled up against Adrian’s side, her eyes fluttering shut as exhaustion finally overtook her.
Then Mara looked back at Adrian. The billionaire who ruled the underworld of Chicago with an iron fist was currently holding his breath so he wouldn't wake a sleeping child.

“You can’t keep her locked in a penthouse forever, Adrian,” Mara said quietly, her voice losing its edge.
“Watch me,” Adrian replied.
