CHAPTER 3: The Woman Behind the Name

CHAPTER 3: The Woman Behind the Name
The doorbell echoed through the mansion a second time.
No one moved.
The Montgomery family sat frozen around the glittering Christmas table, as though standing might somehow make the nightmare real.
Rachel calmly zipped Sophie's winter coat.
"It's all right, sweetheart," she whispered. "Mommy's here."
Sophie's tiny fingers still trembled as they wrapped around Rachel's hand.
Only then did Rachel look toward the front entrance.
"Someone should answer the door."
Harold finally found his voice.
"This is my house."
He marched toward the foyer with all the authority he had built over forty years as head of the Montgomery family.
He opened the door.
The confidence vanished from his face.
Eight men and women stood outside in tailored black overcoats despite the falling snow.
No logos.
No unnecessary conversation.
Only quiet discipline.
At the center stood a silver-haired gentleman wearing white gloves, holding a leather portfolio embossed with a discreet silver crest.
He bowed slightly.
"Good evening."
"I am Daniel Park, Chief Executive Secretary to Chairman Rachel Vance."
Harold blinked.
"...Chairman?"
Park nodded politely.
"We've come to escort our Chairwoman home."
Before Harold could respond, two additional vehicles rolled through the estate gates.
One carried private security.
The other carried members of Rachel's executive office.
The Montgomery servants watched from the hallway in stunned silence.
Amanda whispered from the dining room,
"Oh my God..."
Park stepped inside after receiving Rachel's slight nod.
The atmosphere changed immediately.
Not because he raised his voice.
But because everyone present instinctively understood that this was a man accustomed to standing beside extraordinary power.
He walked directly toward Rachel.
Without hesitation, he bowed.
Not a polite nod.
A full, respectful bow.
"Merry Christmas, Chairman."
"We apologize for arriving later than instructed."
Rachel smiled faintly.
"You followed protocol."
"Thank you, Daniel."
He noticed Sophie's tear-stained face.
His expression hardened.
"Has Miss Sophie been harmed?"
Rachel answered quietly.
"Emotionally."
For the first time since entering the house, Park's composure cracked.
His jaw tightened.
"I understand."
He turned to one of the security officers.
"Document everything."
Immediately, discreet body cameras activated.
Another assistant photographed the dining room.
The shattered wineglass.
The untouched Christmas dinner.
Sophie's discarded shoes near the kitchen.
The open trash compactor.
Diane stepped forward angrily.
"You can't just come into my home taking pictures!"
Park looked at her with calm indifference.
"We can."
Rachel spoke without looking up.
"Daniel."
"Retrieve the dress."
Diane laughed.
"That thing is garbage by now."
Park simply nodded toward two security officers.
Minutes later they disappeared into the kitchen.
The Montgomery family exchanged uncertain looks.
Then—
One officer returned carrying a sealed evidence bag.
Inside lay the rainbow dress.
Crushed.
Covered in food waste.
Several ribbons had been shredded by the compactor.
Tiny beads clung to grease and broken eggshells.
One sleeve had been torn almost completely away.
Sophie's breathing caught.
"My dress..."
Rachel took the evidence bag gently.
She stared at it for several seconds.
Every stitch represented hours spent beside her daughter.
Every crooked sparkle reminded her of Sophie's laughter.
Now it looked like trash.
Something inside Rachel quietly died.
She handed the bag back to Park.
"Preserve it."
"Yes, Chairman."
Trevor scoffed.
"For heaven's sake."
"It's just a stupid dress."
Rachel slowly turned toward him.
"No."
"It's evidence."
An uncomfortable silence settled over the room.
Park opened the leather portfolio.
"Chairman, while traveling here we completed a preliminary review of the Montgomery family's corporate relationships."
Harold frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Park glanced briefly at Rachel.
Receiving a tiny nod, he continued.
"Montgomery Construction currently finances seventy-two percent of its operating capital through First Dominion Commercial Bank."
Harold crossed his arms.
"So?"
Park turned another page.
"First Dominion Commercial Bank is wholly owned by Vance International Holdings."
Harold's expression froze.
Park continued.
"Montgomery Logistics leases its warehouse properties from Kingston Commercial Estates."
Another page.
"Also owned by Vance International."
Amanda's smile disappeared.
Park kept reading.
"Your health insurance provider."
"Your fleet financing."
"Your equipment leasing."
"Your export guarantees."
"Your commercial software licenses."
"Your pension management."
He closed the folder.
"All controlled directly or indirectly by Chairman Rachel Vance."
The room became impossibly still.
Harold stared at Rachel.
"That's..."
"No."
"That's impossible."
Rachel folded her hands.
"Five years ago, Nathan asked me to leave business outside this family."
"I agreed."
"I never interfered."
"I never mentioned my companies."
"I never corrected your assumptions."
Harold's face reddened.
"You let us think you were poor."
Rachel answered honestly.
"No."
"You chose to believe it."
No one argued.
Because she was right.
No one had ever actually asked.
They had simply seen homemade gifts, simple clothing, and an old SUV.
Then they had filled in the rest with arrogance.
Nathan suddenly walked into the dining room.
Snow covered his coat.
He had rushed home after receiving Rachel's message.
"What happened?"
His eyes immediately found Sophie.
She burst into tears.
"Daddy..."
Nathan knelt instantly.
"Sweetheart..."
Rachel quietly explained everything.
She didn't exaggerate.
She didn't raise her voice.
She simply described how Diane had destroyed the dress.
As she spoke, Nathan's face slowly lost all color.
When Rachel finished, he stood.
His eyes locked onto his mother.
"Tell me she's lying."
Diane folded her arms.
"It was an ugly dress."
Nathan's breathing stopped.
"You..."
He looked at the evidence bag.
Then at Sophie's shaking shoulders.
Then back at Diane.
"You made my little girl cry on Christmas Eve..."
Diane rolled her eyes.
"Oh, don't be dramatic."
Nathan's hand slammed onto the dining table with such force that crystal glasses jumped.
"Don't."
The single word echoed through the mansion.
Everyone stared.
Nathan had never shouted at his parents.
Not once.
Until tonight.
"I spent five years asking Rachel to give you another chance."
"I defended every insult."
"Every holiday."
"Every cruel comment."
His voice broke.
"But my daughter..."
He pointed toward Sophie.
"...was supposed to be off limits."
Diane actually looked offended.
"So you're choosing your wife over your own mother?"
Nathan answered without hesitation.
"No."
"I'm choosing my family."
He walked to Rachel.
Took her hand.
Then held Sophie's tiny fingers between theirs.
"This..."
He said quietly.
"...is my family."
"And if you can't love them..."
He looked around the room one final time.
"...then tonight is the last Christmas you'll ever spend with us."
Without another word, Nathan picked up Sophie's small backpack.
Rachel reached for her coat.
Secretary Park stepped aside respectfully.
The entire executive team silently formed a path toward the front door.
As the three of them began walking away, Harold suddenly shouted,
"Nathan!"
Nathan stopped but did not turn around.
Harold's voice trembled.
"If you walk out that door..."
"...don't expect to come back."
Nathan smiled sadly.
"I've been trying to come back for five years."
He finally looked over his shoulder.
"But there hasn't been a family here to come back to."
He walked out into the falling snow.
The front doors closed behind them.
Inside the mansion, no one spoke.
Outside, Rachel's convoy waited with headlights glowing against the white Christmas night.
As Rachel helped Sophie into the warm back seat of the limousine, Secretary Park quietly approached.
"Chairman."
"The emergency reports have already begun."
Rachel looked back once at the brightly lit Montgomery mansion.
"Good."
Park hesitated.
"There is one additional matter."
Rachel raised an eyebrow.
"The board of Vance International has unanimously requested authorization."
"For what?"
Park's voice remained calm.
"To begin a full strategic review..."
"...of every company connected to the Montgomery family."
Rachel looked through the limousine window at Nathan, who was gently comforting Sophie.

Then she spoke five words that would shake an entire business empire.
"Begin with Orion Global first."
