CHAPTER 4: Monday Morning Massacre

CHAPTER 4: Monday Morning Massacre

At 7:30 a.m. on December 26, the elevators inside Orion Global Headquarters opened in complete silence.

Executives who normally laughed over expensive coffee stood whispering instead.

Rumors had spread through the company overnight.

A Christmas party.

A phone call.

A suspended executive.

An emergency board meeting.

No one knew the full story.

But everyone knew one name.

Rachel Vance.

At exactly 8:00 a.m., the boardroom doors opened.

Every director stood.

Rachel entered wearing a charcoal-gray tailored suit, black heels, and a single strand of pearls.

Gone was the quiet housewife.

In her place stood the woman financial magazines had once called "the most feared negotiator in modern business."

She acknowledged no applause.

No greetings.

Only business.

"Let's begin."

Michael Lawson rose first.

"Chairman, the investigation into Trevor Montgomery concluded at 6:40 this morning."

He placed a thick report on the table.

"The evidence is overwhelming."

Rachel opened the file.

Every statement.

Every recording.

Every witness interview.

Every security photograph.

Even social media posts from previous years revealing Trevor's repeated contempt toward employees, waiters, cleaners, and junior staff.

Rachel closed the folder.

"Recommendation?"

Lawson answered immediately.

"Termination for cause."

"Permanent disqualification from executive leadership."

"Revocation of all pending bonuses."

Rachel nodded once.

"Approved."

A secretary wrote the decision.

One signature.

Five seconds.

Trevor Montgomery's career was over.

But Rachel wasn't finished.

"What about the Rogers contract?"

Another director spoke.

"Preliminary audit found irregular entertainment expenses and undisclosed gifts."

Rachel's expression remained unreadable.

"Expand the investigation."

"Yes, Chairman."

"What about Amanda Montgomery's consulting firm?"

Another file appeared.

"Over eighty percent of her revenue comes from Orion referrals."

Rachel didn't hesitate.

"Suspend every referral pending ethics review."

Approved.

"What about Montgomery Construction?"

The Chief Financial Officer answered.

"Our exposure exceeds one hundred eighty million dollars."

Rachel looked around the table.

"Have they ever missed a payment?"

"No."

"Then we honor every legal obligation."

Several directors looked surprised.

Rachel noticed.

"We are not here to punish people illegally."

"We are here to ensure our standards mean something."

Silence followed.

That single sentence reminded everyone why she remained Chairwoman.

She never confused justice with revenge.

Secretary Park entered quietly.

"Chairman."

"The press has arrived."

Rachel glanced toward the glass wall overlooking the city.

Television vans lined the street below.

News helicopters circled overhead.

One ethics investigation had already become national news.

Lawson asked carefully,

"Should we release a statement?"

Rachel stood.

"Yes."

"But tell the truth."

"No embellishment."

"No personal attacks."

"Only facts."

As she reached the door, Park handed her a tablet.

"One final update."

Rachel looked down.

Her expression hardened.

"What is it?"

Park answered softly.

"Mrs. Diane Montgomery has scheduled a television interview."

Rachel raised an eyebrow.

"What does she intend to say?"

Park looked almost apologetic.

"She claims you fabricated the entire story..."

"...and that she's the real victim."

Rachel smiled.

Not warmly.

Not kindly.

The smile of a woman who had spent twenty years dismantling people who mistook confidence for invincibility.

"Very well."

She handed the tablet back.

May you like

"If Mrs. Montgomery wants an audience..."

"...let's make sure the whole country is watching."
