Chapter 6 - The Long Road to Healing

While the legal storm consumed my mother and sister, my entire focus shifted to where it truly belonged: Gwen’s recovery.

Dr. Vance initiated her first chemotherapy cycle in the private oncology suite. I spent every single day by her side, holding her hand during the long hours of infusion, reading to her, and making sure she ate rich, nutritious meals prepared by the hospital's specialized nutrition team.

With the toxicity of my family removed from her life, Gwen’s spirit began to return. Her skin lost its hollow gray tint, regaining a faint, healthy color. The medical team managed her nausea with advanced medication, and slowly, she began to trust that she was no longer in danger.

"Ethan," she whispered one evening as the sunset painted the hospital room in warm gold tones. "Are we going to be okay? What about the house? What about everything they took?"

"The house is being sold to an investor," I told her softly, smoothing the soft cotton beanie over her head. "And every penny recovered from their seized assets is going directly into a private trust fund in your name. You will never have to worry about a bill, a roof, or a doctor for the rest of your life."

She looked at me, her eyes glistening with tears. "I was so scared you wouldn't believe me when you came home."

"I will always believe you, Gwen," I said, kissing her knuckles. "I promised to protect you when I put this ring on your finger, and I will honor that promise until my last breath."

Meanwhile, back at the law office, Arthur Sterling was laying down the final hammer. The district attorney had reviewed the notarized affidavits Margaret and Paige had stupidly signed. Facing undeniable physical, financial, and digital evidence, the state prosecutor upgraded the charges to include felony fraud and intentional infliction of severe bodily harm through medical neglect.
