Chapter 7
The Reckoning of the Shadows
The fallout from Margaret’s arrest shook New York high society to its absolute core. The tabloids ran front-page stories detailing the "Monsters of Manhattan," completely reversing the narrative Margaret had tried to build. The public view shifted overnight, transforming Ava into a symbol of incredible resilience and survival, while Daniel was praised as the rare corporate titan who chose love and justice over blood loyalty.
But inside the privacy of their estate, the war wasn't entirely over.
Daniel sat in his father’s old study, looking out at the sprawling manicured gardens. Marcus entered, holding a secure satellite phone. "Sir, the mechanic, a man named Thomas Vance, has broken under interrogation. He admitted that Margaret didn't act alone. The black-market neurotoxins were supplied by a rival pharmaceutical executive named Richard Thorne."
Daniel’s eyes narrowed. Richard Thorne had been a jilted suitor of Ava's mother twenty-five years ago, a man who had tried to claim a stake in the Aurora shipping trust for decades.
"Thorne thinks that with Margaret in prison, the trust is vulnerable," Marcus explained. "Our intelligence indicates he has hired a rogue extraction team to target the hospital clinic where Rosa is currently staying under protective custody. He wants to eliminate the primary witness to the brake-tampering."
Daniel stood up, his jaw tightening. "He’s targeting Rosa? The girl who saved my wife's life?"
"Yes, sir. They’re planning to strike tonight during the shift change."
Daniel walked over to the gun safe hidden behind the oil portrait of his grandfather. He pulled out a sleek, matte-black tactical pistol, checking the magazine with a practiced, steady fluidity. "We’ve spent too much time defending, Marcus. It’s time to show these bastards what happens when they try to touch my family."

"What’s the plan, Mr. Daniel?"
"We don't cancel the shift change," Daniel said, a dangerous, dark smile touching his lips. "We enhance it. Tell the team to set the trap. Tonight, Richard Thorne’s empire joins my mother's in the dust."
