Part 15

Before Evan’s hand could even get close to my arm, Sheriff Miller stepped forward with terrifying speed.
He grabbed Evan’s wrist, twisting it sharply behind his back and forcing him down onto the hood of my truck with a heavy thud.
"Don't move," Tom barked, his voice like thunder.
"Let me go!" Evan screamed, his face pressed against the warm metal of the hood. "Do you know who I am? I will have your badge for this! This is police brutality! I didn't do anything wrong!"
"You're under arrest for suspected domestic violence and felony child abuse," Tom said calmly, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt and clicking them tightly around Evan's wrists. "You have the right to remain silent. I highly suggest you start using that right immediately."
The passenger door of my truck clicked open.
Maya stepped out slowly, her eyes wide as she watched the man who had terrified her for years finally pinned down, helpless and defeated, on the hood of an old pickup truck.
Evan twisted his head, glaring at her with pure venom. "You did this, Maya! You ruined our family! You’re nothing without me! You’ll starve on the streets!"
Maya stopped walking. She stood up straight, her shoulders square, looking down at him.

The fear in her eyes was completely gone, replaced by a cold, hard certainty.
"I'm not nothing, Evan," she said, her voice clear and strong. "And you are never going to touch my children again."
