Part 21

By the time we got back to my house, it was completely dark.
The front porch light was burning bright, casting a warm, welcoming glow across the front yard. My neighbor's car was parked in the driveway, showing me that the kids were still safe inside.
Maya got out of the truck first, her movements light and hurried.
As we walked through the front door, the smell of warm stew filled the air. Tanner and Lily were sitting at the kitchen table, playing a card game with my neighbor.
The moment the door opened, Lily dropped her cards and looked up.
"Mommy!" she cried out.
Maya fell to her knees as Lily threw herself into her arms, hugging her neck so tightly her knuckles turned white. Tanner stood up more slowly, his eyes moving from his mother's bruised face to me.
I gave him a small, firm nod.
The boy let out a breath he seemed to have been holding for months. His shoulders dropped, and he walked over, joining the embrace, burying his face into his mother's shoulder.
My neighbor stood up quietly, giving me a soft smile as she slipped out the back door to give us space.
I stood in the doorway of my own kitchen, watching my daughter and my grandchildren hold onto each other. The digital recorder was still in my pocket, but its power was gone now. The truth was out in the open.
There would be legal battles ahead, lawyers to fight, and a lot of healing to do.

The nightmare was finally over. They were home.
