Chapter 18 - The Sister's Betrayal

|
While Derek was being escorted back to his holding cell to await his criminal trial for assault and violating a court order, Skylar walked out of the courthouse into the bright Miami sunshine.
As she stood on the marble steps, waiting for Cassandra to hail a cab, a familiar, irritating voice called out to her.
"Skylar! Wait!"
Skylar turned to see Suzanne Foster hurrying up the steps. Suzanne looked disheveled; her designer roots were growing out, and the expensive clothes she wore looked wrinkled. With Derek in jail and Skylar's bank accounts locked down, Suzanne’s lavish, subsidized lifestyle had crashed into a brutal reality wall.
"Skylar, please, I need to talk to you," Suzanne pleaded, stopping a few feet away, eyeing the scar on Skylar's jaw.
"We have nothing to talk about, Suzanne," Skylar said coldly, not moving an inch.
"Please, my landlord is evicting me on Friday," Suzanne begged, her entitlement finally giving way to desperation. "Derek ruined everything. He’s crazy, I know he is. I didn't know he was stealing from you to pay me, I swear! Can't you just loan me a few thousand dollars? Just until I get on my feet?"
Skylar stared at her former sister-in-law. For six years, she had bent over backward to accommodate this woman's impossible demands, constantly made to feel like a villain for protecting her own hard-earned money.
"You didn't know he was stealing?" Skylar asked, raising an eyebrow. "You knew exactly what you were doing. You demanded a designer handbag while I was standing in a hospital with a burned face."
"I didn't know he burned you then!" Suzanne protested weakly.
"It wouldn't have mattered if you did," Skylar replied, her voice steady and absolute. "Derek is going to prison. I am entirely free of him. And as of today, I am entirely free of you. Do not ever contact me again."
Skylar turned her back on Suzanne and got into the waiting yellow cab next to her lawyer.
As the car pulled away from the courthouse, Skylar looked out the window and watched Suzanne standing alone on the sidewalk, completely cut off from the bank account she had treated like her personal ATM.

"That handled nicely," Cassandra noted with a smirk.
"It feels like closing a very heavy book," Skylar agreed, leaning back against the leather seat. "I'm ready to go home."
