Chapter 20 - The Healing Arc

|

Six months later, life had settled into a beautiful, vibrant rhythm.

Skylar was promoted to Director of Regional Logistics at her firm, a position she had actively campaigned for with a newfound, unshakable confidence. Without Derek constantly undermining her ambition or draining her finances, her career and her savings accounts were flourishing.

The physical burn on her face had healed remarkably well. The blistered, angry red skin had faded into a smooth, pale pink scar that traced the delicate line of her jaw. She didn't try to hide it with heavy makeup anymore. When people occasionally asked about it, she simply smiled and said, "It's a reminder of a battle I won."

Derek was currently serving a three-year sentence in a state correctional facility for felony aggravated battery and violation of a protective order. Skylar never checked up on him, never searched his name, and completely ignored the pathetic, apologetic letter he tried to send her through his lawyer. He was a ghost she had banished to the past.

It was a crisp Saturday morning. Skylar woke up early, the sunlight streaming through the sheer curtains of her bedroom.

She walked into her bright, yellow kitchen and turned on the espresso machine. She selected a beautiful, hand-painted blue mug from her cabinet and placed it under the spout.

The smell of dark roast coffee filled the air.

Six months ago, that smell would have triggered a severe panic attack. Today, it was just the comforting scent of a quiet, peaceful morning.

Skylar poured a splash of oat milk into her coffee, picked up the mug, and walked into her living room. She sat on her plush velvet sofa, curling her legs underneath her, and opened a new book.

There was no one to demand her attention. No one to criticize what she was wearing. No one to ask for her bank card.

She took a slow, deliberate sip of her hot coffee. It tasted absolutely perfect.

Skylar Bennett looked around her beautiful, hard-won sanctuary, took a deep breath, and finally allowed herself to just exist in the beautiful, unbreakable peace she had built.
