Chapter 2 - The Archive of Shadows

The sterile smell of antiseptic in the hospital room felt like a physical weight. On the bed, my mother’s breathing had finally settled into a deep, exhausted rhythm. Her left arm was wrapped tightly in plaster, the untreated wrist fracture now set properly by the surgical team. In the chair beside her, Elena sat quietly with a sterile white bandage over her left eyebrow, staring out the window at the flickering streetlights of the city below.
I quietly closed the laptop screen an inch, making sure the blue light wouldn't wake Mom, and looked over at Elena.
— You should go back to your room and rest, Elena, I said softly. You’ve been through hell today. I can stay here with my mother.
Elena shook her head, her dark eyes meeting mine with a quiet, unwavering strength that defied everything she had endured.
— I’m fine, Mr. Daniel, she whispered. I couldn't sleep even if I went back. Every time I close my eyes, I see Mrs. Vanessa standing over your mother with that spoon.
A cold fury stirred deep in my chest. I had spent eight months in the brutal, scorching deserts of Saudi Arabia, supervising complex refinery expansions and managing multi-million-dollar logistical networks, believing my family was safe and cared for. I had sent thousands of dollars home every month, trusting the woman I married to look after the mother who had raised me.
Instead, I had funded my own home’s chamber of horrors.
I turned the laptop fully back toward me and typed in my master encryption key.
The screen flickered, loading the hidden server directory. The folder was labeled SECURE-ARCHIVE-REMOTE-911. Inside were thousands of compressed video files, automatically categorized by date, time, and room location.
I clicked on the folder dated three months ago—the exact week Vanessa had supposedly discovered that the 'visible' security system was malfunctioning and ordered it dismantled.
The video opened. The timestamp read 2:14 PM.
The kitchen was brightly lit by the afternoon sun. Mom was sitting in her wheelchair near the island, quietly trying to spoon soup from a bowl. Vanessa stood over her, her face twisted in an ugly, venomous sneer that bore no resemblance to the polished, smiling socialite she pretended to be in public.
“You’re spilling it again, you pathetic old load,” Vanessa snapped on the audio feed, grabbing the edge of the bowl and shoving it backward so the hot soup splashed across Mom’s lap. “Do you have any idea how much work it is to clean up after you? Your son isn't even here to wipe your chin anymore. No one cares about you.”
Mom whimpered, curling her frail shoulders inward as she tried to dodge the verbal assault.
Then, the back door opened, and Elena walked into the frame holding a basket of folded laundry. The moment Elena saw what was happening, she dropped the basket, rushed across the room, and stepped right between Vanessa and my mother.
“Don't do that, Mrs. Vanessa!” Elena pleaded, her voice trembling but firm. “She’s an elderly woman! Please!”
Vanessa’s expression didn't show guilt. It showed absolute, unbridled rage at being challenged.
“Get out of my way, you good-for-nothing immigrant,” Vanessa hissed, raising her hand and striking Elena hard across the face, sending her stumbling back against the kitchen counter. “You’re only here because I need a maid, not because you have a voice in my house!”
I gripped the edge of the table so hard my knuckles turned bone white. The laptop screen cast a harsh, pale glow over my face.
There were one hundred and eleven more days of this.
Every single day, systematic psychological torment, physical intimidation, withholding of food, and cruel isolation. Vanessa hadn't just mistreated my mother out of frustration; she had systematically tortured two defenseless women while treating my house like her own private kingdom of fear.
And she wasn't alone in the later clips.
As I scrolled further down the archive list to the files dated two weeks prior, a second figure appeared in the hallway footage—a man wearing an expensive tailored suit, casually sipping wine in my living room while Vanessa laughed on the sofa.
My heart stopped.
I zoomed in on the man's face, pausing the video.
It was Richard Vance—no relation to my wife, but a notorious local real estate developer and corporate raider who had been trying to buy my mother’s ancestral property down by the lake for years.
The pieces of the puzzle suddenly slammed together with terrifying clarity.
Vanessa hadn't just been abusing my family out of spite. She was working with Richard to force my mother into signing over the deed to the lake house while I was thousands of miles away across the ocean.

I closed the laptop, stood up slowly, and reached for my phone.
It was time to audit the Vanessa empire.
